Statement:
Designing effective
advisor training and development programs is among the most significant
and difficult challenges facing advising professionals. Those
who are charged with developing those programs need ideas, sample
materials, support and encouragement. The Advisor Training and
Development Commission exists to provide members with an opportunity
to discuss issues and share best practices. I would be pleased
to facilitate those discussions by serving as Commission Chair.
I have 23 years of experience
in academic advising, including eleven years as Director of the
Academic Advisement Center at Southwest Missouri State University.
NACADA conferences and resources have been essential to the advisor
training and development program on my campus. For example, I
wrote the initial proposal for our Master Advisor Program at a
NACADA Summer Institute and I have used the NACADA advisor training
video 35 times to train over 700 academic advisors. I appreciate
these resources and would enjoy helping to develop additional
resources that would support other advisors and administrators.
Because I have benefited
so much from the work of past NACADA leaders, I would be honored
to be a future leader of the Advisor Training and Development
Commission.
