Platform Statement:

  • Highlight the goals you accomplished and the work you did while serving as a Unit Chair or Division Representative. In addition, highlight your involvement in all areas of the Association, demonstrating your experiences that make you qualified to serve in this position on the NACADA Board of Directors.

The projects undertaken, the goals achieved, the visions made reality-all appear as mere bullet points above, but behind each of these bullets is an issue that required attention, a tradition that needed to be revisited, a concept that required translation into reality-all in service, ultimately, to improving the lives and academic careers of our students. A sampling of my involvement across the Association includes creating an Awards Oversight Committee, restructuring the national Awards program, serving on the Advising Administration Commission's Steering Committee, chairing the Commission's Awards Committee, chairing the Advisory Board for the new Faculty Advising Training Video, and serving as an instructor in both the Faculty Seminar and the Summer Institute.

Perhaps the most generally instructive (and productive) positions I've held are those of co-chair of NACADA's Administrative Division and member of the NACADA Council. In these positions, I have been able to observe just how beautifully NACADA's organizational structure works by allowing all voices of the Association to be recognized through the Regional Division, the Commission and Interest Group Division, and the Administrative Division.

  • What do you believe are the most important goals and initiatives for the Association in meeting its strategic plan and what do you feel you can contribute to this position in meeting these goals and initiatives?

One of the primary mission statements in NACADA's strategic plan is that the Association "encourage the contributions of all members and promote the involvement of diverse populations." It is my belief that only with the full involvement of all constituencies that the rest of the strategic plan-addressing the academic advising needs of higher education, advancing the body of knowledge of academic advising, championing the educational role of academic advising to enhance student learning and development, and affirming the role of advising in supporting institutional mission and vitality-can assume substance and meaning.

Through my work in the Administrative Division and on the Council, I have, at least in some small way, helped to ensure the adoption of the "Emerging Leaders Program," one of the most important initiatives to come forward from the membership-specifically from the Diversity Committee.

As a result of the good, determined work of the folks who crafted this Program, NACADA has the opportunity to broaden and enhance leadership opportunities for everyone. As a member of the Board, I will be in a position to ensure that the goals of this Program are not only met but exceeded. In the end, this is what the Association is all about.

  • Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position?

As a result of the various positions I have held in the Association (voluntary, appointed, and elected), I have had the opportunity to stand on tiptoe to observe just how quickly NACADA has grown and expanded-and changed-in just a relatively short time. We all understand that with growth spurts come growing pains, and, as a result, the leadership of the Association must continue to be sensitive, responsive, and accountable to the changing needs of its membership. I am interested in helping to make sure the Board remains open and responsive to the interests and needs of its members.

Also influential in my decision to run for Board membership are those who have served on the Board and as Presidents in the past. From them, I have been fortunate enough to learn exactly what it means to work in an atmosphere of genial good will and shared goals, and to exchange ideas and experiences cooperatively for the greater good. Others who are nominated for the NACADA Board this year will say, as I do, that serving on the Board is also a wonderful way to give back to an organization that has given us so much.

  • Provide any additional comments or information (either personal or leadership-related) that you want potential voters to know about you that is not covered elsewhere in your platform information.

In the professional organizations associated with my scholarly and academic discipline, there is an attitude of "Freely share my scholarship and research with you?? I don't think so."   With NACADA, the attitude is one of "Here are the results of my scholarship and research. Please feel free to take them and call them your own."

I am so thankful to be affiliated with an organization that embraces the talents and ideas of all of its members, an organization that understands that, when all is said and done, it's all about people. It's all about our members, and it's all about the students we serve. I would be grateful for your vote.
