Platform Statement:
Highlight your previous involvement within this unit that
will help you in leading this unit. What roles have
you played within this particular unit as a member thus far?
|
My name is Michael Broshears, and it is with great enthusiasm that
I write to express my interest in the Advising Administration Commission
Chair position. While I am relatively new to this commission, I
did serve as a reader this past year for conference proposals coming
through the Advising Administration track.
In
the past three years, I have increased my involvement within NACADA
at the state and regional level. This past summer and fall, as a
Region 5 Steering Committee member, I coordinated the Grant application
and selection process for the region. I also served as the Illinois
state liaison to NACADA from March 2006 to October 2007. Finally,
I have presented on numerous occasions at the state and national
level on issues affecting advising administrators.
I
am confident that all of my experiences within NACADA have prepared
me to lead this particular commission, and if offered the opportunity,
I will do my best to represent NACADA and the Advising Administration
Commission in a professional manner.
What do you believe are the most important goals and initiatives
for this unit in meeting the strategic plan for both the unit and
the Association?
According
to the NACADA web site, the purpose of the Advising Administration
Commission is to "provide a forum for sharing ideas and discussing
common concerns" in the area of Advising Administration.
Working
to represent the diverse interests in the commission would be my
primary goal as commission chair. Connecting those persons within
the commission and throughout NACADA with similar interests is also
a priority. I would continue to encourage opportunities for networking
within the commission, and I would want to continue to provide resources
to the commission members in the way of concurrent sessions at regional
and national conferences, list serves, and the NACADA web site.
Finally,
I think it is important for the commission to reach out to those
looking to move into advising administration. This initiative could
be achieved through intentional commission involvement in the Emerging
Leaders' program.
Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or
what influenced you to run for this leadership position?
I
have benefited tremendously from my involvement with NACADA, and
this organization has given me many of the tools that have led to
my success as a new advising administrator. Others that I have worked
with in this organization continue to encourage my involvement,
and I have always had the support of others to stay involved. My
last two professional positions have been more administrative in
nature, and I have enjoyed this new role.
Professionally, leading this commission seems to be a perfect fit.
It gives me the opportunity to share with others the passion I have
for this work, and it keeps me involved with an organization that
has done so much to help me.
Provide any additional comments or information (either
personal or leadership-related)
that you want potential voters to know about you that is not covered
elsewhere in your platform information.
I
have spent my entire professional career working to help college
students create a successful college experience for themselves,
and I view my primary role in this profession as that of an educator
with an ethical responsibility to improve the lives of those around
me. I currently work as the Director of University Division at the
University of Southern Indiana. I have been in this new position
for less than a month. University Division coordinates a variety
of academic programs and services to enhance all students' academic
success at USI. I am excited to start in this new role. Thanks to
all of you that have encouraged me to get involved in this worthwhile
organization.
