Platform Statement:
Highlight your previous involvement within this unit that
will help you in leading this unit. What roles have
you played within this particular unit as a member thus far? |
Over the last 6 years, I have become more & more involved with
NACADA. I started off by attending my state conference in 2001,
then I presented at the Region 10 conference the next year, and
I’ve been coming back ever since. Unlike many professional conferences,
NACADA has always provided me with relevant, practical information
and ideas that I can take back to my students, colleagues and institution.
I’ve
been on 2 planning committees for our joint state conference (Colorado/Wyoming)
and acted as Program Chair for the Region 10 conference held in
Denver in 2005. In fall of 2006 I started serving on the Region
10 Steering Committee which prepared me to lead as interim Region
10 Chair this fall. The experience that I will gain from this current
term as interim chair will be invaluable to providing leadership
to Region 10. At the national conference in Baltimore this year
I was able to network with others in leadership positions across
our region and the nation. These contacts will help me to work within
the NACADA organization to further the opportunities and recognition
for members of our region.
What do you believe are the most important goals and initiatives
for this unit in meeting the strategic plan for both the unit and
the Association?
My
goals as Region 10 Chair are:
- Continue to update region members of
opportunities offered through NACADA.
- Increase regional recognition &
involvement at the national level by continuing to acknowledge
and honor our members for outstanding service and achievements
in advising.
- Collaborate with other professional
organizations within the region.
- Identify and support the professional
development needs of our diverse members that are not currently
being met through involvement with NACADA activities.
- Develop opportunities within our region
for scholarships to attend regional and national NACADA events
and/or pursue graduate studies related to advising.
- Increase access to NACADA resources
by organizing “drive outs” to areas of our region that have difficulty
getting to professional development events because of lack of
support at their institutions.
- Identifying and supporting advisors
in our region to participate in the Emerging Leaders Program.
Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or
what influenced you to run for this leadership position?
A
colleague introduced me to NACADA nearly 7 years ago. Over the years
I have become increasingly involved in NACADA because the benefits,
both personal & professional, have been exceptional. I’ve found
NACADA to be an instrumental part of my growth as a professional
advisor. I look forward to serving our membership and giving back
to our advising community.
Provide any additional comments or information (either
personal or leadership-related)
that you want potential voters to know about you that is not covered
elsewhere in your platform information.
I
started advising students 12 years ago as a transfer evaluator at
a state college. This urban teaching institution serves non-traditional
students and has a 23% minority enrollment. Eight years ago I moved
to a professional advising position at a tier one research university.
My current institution has a mix of staff, faculty & professional
exempt advisors. As a front line advisor with my broad institutional
background, I believe I am uniquely equipped to understand the variety
of issues facing advisors all across our region. We truly have an
amazing, inspiring group of professionals here in the Rocky Mountain
region. I would be honored to represent you.
