Platform Statement:
Highlight the goals you accomplished and the work you did while serving as a Unit Chair or Division Representative. In addition, highlight your involvement in all areas of the Association, demonstrating your experiences that make you qualified to serve in this position on the NACADA Board of Directors. |
I have been fortunate to have the wonderful opportunity to be involved
in many aspects of NACADA, as a member, conference presenter, conference
planner, commission chair, committee member, author and editor.
These experiences have challenged me to learn and develop professionally
and they have filled me with excitement about the seemingly endless
opportunities for professional growth through NACADA. Although greatly
enriched by my experiences with NACADA, these opportunities have
also provided me with a broad overview of the tremendous impact
NACADA has on individuals, higher education institutions, and other
national associations. If honored to serve on NACADA’s Board of
Directors, I will work to preserve the programs that have made NACADA
the respected professional association it is. I will also support
innovative programs that serve NACADA members and member institutions,
maintain fiscal responsibility, and promote leadership from the
wide diversity that makes NACADA strong.
What do you believe are the most important goals and initiatives
for the Association in meeting its strategic plan and what do you
feel you can contribute to this position in meeting these goals
and initiatives?
NACADA
is the premier advising association nationally and emerging internationally.
I would like to see us continue the great work of past NACADA leaders
in providing professional development opportunities for professional
advisors, faculty advisors, counselors, administrators and others
who touch the lives of students. As we continue to reach out to
other professional organizations, like NCAA (National Collegiate
Athletic Association), NCHC (National Collegiate Honors Council),
FYE (First Year Experience) and publishers like Jossey-Bass, we
strengthen our influence on all aspects of advising. As distance
education programs flourish on our own campuses, so too is NACADA
committed to professional development opportunities at a distance
through webinars, CD’s and print publications. Fostering the development
of new advisors, through conference sessions, publications, and
interest groups should be an on-going activity for NACADA. The new
Emerging Leaders Program is a great start for identifying, supporting
and mentoring future leaders for NACADA. I have attended every NACADA
National Conference since 1999. My consistent commitment and active
involvement in NACADA has allowed me to help NACADA meet the challenges
we face in identifying and acting on critical issues facing academic
advising.
Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or
what influenced you to run for this leadership position?
I
am committed to serving in NACADA in any way that ultimately
benefits students, advisors, and the profession of academic advising.
It is only a small way of repaying those in NACADA from whom I have
gained so much. From my first NACADA conference, hearing Vincent
Tinto give the keynote presentation, I have been excited to learn
how I may impact students more profoundly, more intensely and more
permanently. I have stood at the feet of NACADA’s great leaders
and learned what I could never have otherwise learned. I hold a
servant-leader philosophy and if honored by being elected to NACADA’s
Board of Director’s, I will use my energy to support the present
initiatives and work with other members and leaders to determine,
always, how better we can serve the membership.
Provide any additional comments or information (either
personal or leadership-related)
that you want potential voters to know about you that is not covered
elsewhere in your platform information.
I
stand in awe of the great minds, abundant energy, and professional
generosity that permeates NACADA. There are few organizations that
can boast even close to the level of sharing ideas, programs and
materials that is present in NACADA. I began my career in higher
education as a professional advisor. Currently in my role as professor
of psychology and faculty advisor, I understand the challenges of
advising full time with high student advising loads as well as the
problems associated with faculty advising. One of those obstacles
is the low priority placed on advising by some institutions of higher
education. I am pleased to be part of an organization that values
students enough to believe strongly that they not only deserve the
best advisement possible, but that institutions benefit by having
strong advising programs operating in their colleges and universities.
I am grateful for NACADA’s commitment to educating decision makers
on our campus about the role of quality advising in higher education.
Thank you for supporting my nomination to serve on the Board of
Directors.
