Statement:
Highlight
your previous involvement within this unit that will help
you in leading this unit. What roles have you played within
this particular unit as a member thus far? |
I
have been involved with the Education Commission since becoming
a member of NACADA. I served as a member on the steering committee
for the 2006-2007 year.
What do you believe are the most important goals and initiatives
for this unit in meeting the strategic plan for both the unit and
the Association?
I
believe that it will be vital to receive input from members regarding
the challenges they face in daily advising settings (student retention
within academic programs, retention in teaching profession, progress
though teacher education admission portals, professional development,
etc...) in order to determine what resources and support the commission
can provide to its members.
With today's economic challenges, many NACADA members may find themselves
unable to physically attend conferences and I feel that more web
or email interaction could be generated to continue addressing the
needs of members.
One of my main goals would be to increase the number of education-related
sessions or workshops available at regional, state, and national
conferences which are specifically related to teacher education.
Increasing the opportunity for education advisors to network and
problem solve through conferences (both through formal presentations
and also informal social gatherings) would allow more opportunity
for commission members to be involved with the commission.
I also believe that experienced education advisors can serve as
mentors or support leaders to newer academic advisors. I would like
to see more relationships built and possibly starting a mentoring
program within the commission.
Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or
what influenced you to run for this leadership position?
While
the education commission is growing, I would like to see more interaction
among its members. Conferences provide a natural venue to gather
members so that we can discuss and identify issues we face and determine
potential resources, ideas, and support we can share with each other.
I would like to expand on that, by generating more networking and
problem solving via list-serves, possible mentoring program, virtual
meeting rooms, and data sharing.
As an advisor, I am always looking for a better way to accomplish
a task or handle a challenge. I realize that many others experience
the same challenges, issues, situations that I work with on a day
to day basis. I want the commission to serve as a "go to" area where
our members will be able to receive support and fellowship from
others in the same profession.
I believe that serving as the Chair of the education commission
is a privilege and it will require a continual willingness to engage
others to generate participation and support. I feel that my colleagues
have wonderful ideas, many years of experiences, and see the chair
position as an opportunity to help cultivate the sharing of resources
and information by its members.
Provide any additional comments or information (either
personal or leadership-related)
that you want potential voters to know about you that is not covered
elsewhere in your platform information.
I
have worked in the field of academic advising for education majors
for over 8 years, and in higher education for over 12 years. I have
experience working with four year institutions (both public and
private) and partnerships with technical and community colleges.
I am excited about the possibility of serving as the Chair for the
Education Commission and feel that it would be a wonderful opportunity
to give service back to NACADA and its members for all the resources
and support that I have received over the years. I believe that
the knowledge and experiences of the education commission members
are vast and plentiful. I hope to find ways for all the members
to share their ideas, vision, and knowledge with each other.
