Advising Student Athletes Commission Chair

(2-year term, Oct 2009-Oct 2011)

Julie McLaughlin

Cincinnati State Technical & Community College

Cincinnati, OH

Platform Statement:

Highlight your previous involvement within this unit that will help you in leading this unit.  What roles have you played within this particular unit as a member thus far?

I have been an active member of the Advising Student Athletes Commission since joining NACADA in 2003. I have attended all commission meetings at the National Conferences and also became a member of the Steering Committee in 2006. I was actively involved in the monograph, "Advising Student-athletes: A Collaborative Approach to Success" and presented at the national conference in Baltimore on advising student-athletes at the two-year college.

I believe this commission needs to get more involvement from its members and be more active throughout the year. I will utilize my passion for student-athletes to engage members of the commission in order to accomplish our goals and increase membership.

What do you believe are the most important goals and initiatives for this unit in meeting the strategic plan for both the unit and the Association?

I believe we need to increase membership in this unit and do a better job to reach out to all types of advisors (especially those who may not work solely with student-athletes) at all different levels of schools.

This unit also should continue to serve as a liaison with the NCAA and should reach out to other athletic governing bodies (i.e. NJCAA, etc.) to form partnerships as well.

We also need to do a better job of sharing best practices. So many people and schools are doing great things. We need to share that information to help others.

Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position?

I am very honored by this nomination and my interest in running for this position stems from my passion for helping student-athletes be successful young men and women in the classroom, on the field, court, etc. and in life.

This field is always growing and changing (as are the rules). This commission allows professionals who work with student-athletes a place to exchange ideas and network with others in the field.

I have been in the field for ten years now and continue to grow each year. I feel I am excited and ready to take on a leadership position with my peers in this profession.

Provide any additional comments or information (either personal or leadership-related) that you want potential voters to know about you that is not covered elsewhere in your platform information.

In my first three years at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College, we went from a virtually non-existent Athletic Advising program to being recognized as an Exemplary Practice by NACADA. We built our program from the ground up and it is something that makes me very proud.

An aspect of building this program that would influence my work for the commission was that I worked extensively with colleagues who had no background in advising student-athletes and succeeded in getting not just buy in but enthusiastic support for the program.

My unique background of having worked with student-athletes at both the four-year and two-year colleges allows me to see things from both sides of the spectrum and because of this I believe we still have a lot to do to bridge the gap for the two-year college transfers moving on to four-year schools.

I have also worked with both high profile and Olympic sports and understand the different issues that influence these student-athletes.

I believe my passion for student-athletes will allow me to serve this commission with integrity and pride. I hope you will give me the opportunity to work with you!
