Statement:
Highlight
your previous involvement within this unit that will help
you in leading this unit. What roles have you played within
this particular unit as a member thus far? |
I
have been a member of this commission since 2006. During our meeting
at the annual conference in Chicago, I volunteered to work on the
updated monograph.
What do you believe are the most important goals and initiatives
for this unit in meeting the strategic plan for both the unit and
the Association ?
- To
define/refine standards for advisor training and development within
the teaching/learning mission of higher education
-
To further the profession by encouraging commission members to
engage in formal or informal research and to present their findings/observations/experiences
at state, regional and national conferences and/or submit articles
for publication
-
To further develop a commission web site that will serve as a
viable resource
Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or
what influenced you to run for this leadership position?
I
have been the Assistant Director for Advisor Training and Development
at the University of Louisville for almost three years, prior to
that I was an academic advisor for many years and spent several
years in Student Affairs. I have seen advising move from the rescriptive/developmental
phases of the service model to the current transition to a teaching/learning
model. I have direct experience with attempting to change the advising
culture on my campus. It isn't an easy transition and I have the
scars to prove it. I would like to help others that are trying to
make this transition to learn from my trials and tribulations.
Provide any additional comments or information (either
personal or leadership-related)
that you want potential voters to know about you that is not covered
elsewhere in your platform information.
Academic Advising is having the same growing pains that Student
Affairs experienced many years ago. In order to advance the profession
of advising, we must make the jump from a service-oriented process
to an integral part of the teaching mission of higher education.
Research and advisor acculturation are the keys. Through training
and development, we can hasten this transition.
