Platform Statement:

Highlight your previous involvement within this unit that will help you in leading this unit.  What roles have you played within this particular unit as a member thus far?

On and off over the years, I have been actively involved in the Advising Education Majors Commission. I started with this group many years ago when it was an interest group. I was able to share in the excitement and pride as it grew into a commission. I became engaged with this group because I started out as an advisor in the College of Education at Kent State University. I have remained in the College and am now an advising administrator and have new perspectives to share and engage others in. I have a renewed interest in this commission as well as the College of Education became a College of Education, Health, and Human Services. I am hoping this group will afford me the opportunity to learn more and share ideas about this type of college and our students learning and success.

I became more involved in the commission and served a steering committee member and chaired the awards committee. I have not been as active the past few years and would like to reconnect with the commission and my colleagues.

What do you believe are the most important goals and initiatives for this unit in meeting the strategic plan for both the unit and the Association ?

I believe a key goal for this commission is collaboration of its members, so we can learn from our colleagues and share our thoughts and ideas. I think we spend so much of our time re-inventing the wheel when we could benefit from others who have already paved the way.

I also feel there needs to a strong steering committee, so the work is shared among the leadership and membership and does not fall solely to the chair. I think a commission is only truly successful when there is full participation and engagement.

It would also be vital to establish a means of communication between when the commission meets at the National Conference and the time they meet again. I feel the conference is an exhilarating and engaging time and we have good intentions, but as we return to our daily lives we are easily consumed. I would like to find a way to combat this issue and continue the excitement and engagement throughout the year.

Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position?

In my stated goals for the commission I have talked about collaboration and engagement, which I feel, are vital to this leadership position. We need to engage people in a continual and purposeful way. When we feel our input is needed, wanted, heard, and acted on it makes a big difference in how we approach the task and how much we are or are not engaged.

I would like the opportunity to engage others in topics in which I have expertise and passion about. I have been actively engaged in KASADA the Kent State University allied organization of NACADA over the past 4-5 years and I would now like to focus more of my energies on the national organization as I progress in my career.

Provide any additional comments or information (either personal or leadership-related) that you want potential voters to know about you that is not covered elsewhere in your platform information.
