In
the spring of 2000, a task force was convened to examine how NACADA
could best serve faculty advisors. Since the day the group first
convened to the present, significant strides have been made in this
arena-the Faculty Advising Commission was formed and is alive and
well; the annual Faculty Advising Seminar has been a huge success;
the number of presentations on faculty advising issues have increased
significantly at the state, regional, and national levels; the Faculty
Training Video materials have been updated; and a Pocket Guide dedicated
to the needs of Faculty Advisors is currently in production. I am
proud of the role I have played in this recognition of the importance
of faculty advising on our campuses.
NACADA
is an organization that listens to its members. These voices are
heard most loudly through the Commission and Interest Group membership.
As the appointed representative on the Council for the Commission
and Interest Group Division, it was my privilege and pleasure to
carry the member's "voice" forward to the Council, where ideas and
concerns are discussed and formulated for possible action by the
Board. As a member of the Council, I was also able to see how the
three branches of the organization-Administrative, Regional, and
Commissions/Interest Groups-work together to further the interests
of all members of NACADA.
Having learned much about NACADA and its membership as I have served
on various committees and task forces in a variety of capacities
(as outlined below), and having worked with the grassroots of the
organization as a member of the Council, I would like to continue
representing the "voice" of our organization by serving as your
Vice President.
What do you believe are the most important goals and initiatives
for the Association in meeting its strategic plan and what do you
feel you can contribute to this position in meeting these goals
and initiatives?
One of the strategic goals of NACADA is to promote the involvement
of diverse populations. Two diverse populations that need a stronger
presence are those of the two-year colleges and faculty advisors.
As a faculty advisor/advising administrator from a two-year college,
I feel that I would bring the perspective of both of these constituencies
to the office.
As
NACADA has continued to grow nationally, it has also begun to expand
globally. To further promote the role of academic advising within
all of our institutions of higher learning, we need to collaborate
with our international partners. As Vice President, I would continue
to support the work of the International Task Force and welcome
the involvement of academic advisors from around the world as we
work together to develop and support strong advising programs on
our campuses.
NACADA
provides many opportunities for professional development as it strives
to address the academic advising needs of higher education. As the
Vice President, I will work to ensure that professional development
opportunities are available in a number of different formats so
that they are accessible to all members. As a mentor in the program,
and as a member of the Advisory Board, I strongly support the continuation
of the Emerging Leaders Program. In addition, I will work to get
members involved in leadership roles at all levels.
In
its quest to advance the body of knowledge of academic advising,
NACADA needs to collaborate with other professional organizations
devoted to the issues of higher education. Through these partnerships,
the role of academic advising on our campuses will become more apparent
and more appreciated. As the Vice President, I will assist in developing
and sustaining these collaborative efforts.
Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or
what influenced you to run for this leadership position?
NACADA has been a tremendous help to me in the advising roles I
play on my campus-faculty advisor, coordinator of faculty advising
and advisor training, and co-coordinator of peer advising. The professional
growth activities, the opportunities to network with colleagues
from all around the world, and the opportunity to be involved at
many different levels make this a premier organization. In my 11
years as a NACADA member, I have learned a lot, and part of what
I have learned is that people with the same passion working together
towards a common goal can accomplish some awesome things.
NACADA
has grown significantly in the past 11 years, and I feel that, through
my involvement, I have contributed in some small way to that growth.
I would be honored to serve NACADA as its Vice President where I
can continue to represent the all-important "voice" of our membership.
Provide any additional comments or information (either
personal or leadership-related)
that you want potential voters to know about you that is not covered
elsewhere in your platform information.
The different advising hats I wear on my campus, and the different
hats I have worn as I have served NACADA, give me a solid background
for understanding the diverse needs of our membership. If elected
as Vice President, it is this breadth of experience that will make
me an effective advocate for the different constituencies that make
up our membership. Thank you for reading my platform and for voting
in the election. The members make the organization, so let your
voice be heard.
