April Webinar
Pat Folsom (University of Iowa) will serve as a co-presenter for the April 17 Webinar - Ensuring Advisor Success.

Thursday, April 17, 2008

A Live Internet-broadcast Webinar Event

Ensuring Advisor Success: Mastering the Art of Advising through the First Year of Advising and Beyond

Are you a new advisor at the beginning of this exciting career? Are you responsible for the training and development of advisors in your unit or at your institution? Then this broadcast is for you!

Jennifer Joslin (University of Iowa) will serve as a co-presenter for the April 17 Webinar - Ensuring Advisor Success.

Key points for this online presentation by Pat Folsom and Jennifer Joslin (University of Iowa) will include:

  • Advisors new to the profession need extended, ongoing developmental support to master the art of advising.
  • Developmental support should extend past initial training to address issues that arise as new advisors begin working with students and experience seasonal advising issues (e.g. registration periods, drop/add periods).
  • To grow, new advisors must know where they are going. They must have clear expectations/learning outcomes for what they should know and be able to do by certain points in their careers.
  • The NACADA New Advisor Guidebook and the New Advisor Chart included in it provide the means by which new advisors and the people responsible for their training can create developmental road maps.
Monograph image

Join Pat and Jennifer on April 17 to:

  • learn about and understand the purpose of the New Advisor Growth Chart.
  • learn to use the chart to create developmental goals for yourself or for your advisor development program.
  • Identify the issues to be considered in creating a developmental road map.
  • learn about tools you can use (from The New Advisor Guidebook and other sources) to make the journey.

Registration deadline is April 8, but participation is limited by our Service Provider, so don't be left out! - Learn More and Register Today!

Institute for Advising Division I Student-Athletes Registration Deadline Extended

A NACADA/National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) partnership has created the Academic Institute: A Game Plan for Student-Athlete Success scheduled for June 15-18, 2008, in Portsmouth, Va. The Institute is open to NCAA Division I institutions, and there is no registration fee to attend the Institute. Institutions selected for participation will be responsible for travel, lodging, and meals that are not included on the Institute schedule.

The Institute will explore best practices known to contribute to successful institutional support for student-athletes and assist participants in developing models and action plans focused on this goal. Incorporating information from practicing administrators, discussions with peers and institutional “team” analysis, participants will examine institutional practices that can be enhanced to build their institution’s capacity for ensuring the academic success of student-athletes. Experienced administrators will serve as faculty and provide guidance and consultation throughout the process and provide a network of support following the Institute.

A key focus of the institute is to encourage cross-campus collaboration, therefore the event will employ a team-based format, which will not only allow campus colleagues to strengthen their own alliances as they work together during small group discussion sessions, but also will give them an opportunity to develop a network outside their respective institutions. It is recommended that each team include 3-4 institutional staff members from a cross-section of campus units (athletics/academics/student affairs).

Visit the Institute Website to find more detailed information and download an application form. The deadline to return the application to NACADA has been extended to Thursday, April 10.

Contribute to August Webinar on Advisor Training

How can the concept of "Going Green" be applied to advisor training and development?  Ask yourself these questions:

  • Have we initiated programs or developed creative ways of using existing resources for advisor training and development on our campus?
  • Are we facilitating discussion sessions surrounding NACADA Webinar broadcasts?
  • Are we hosting brown bag lunches to discuss articles from Academic Advising Today and/or the NACADA Clearinghouse of Academic Advising Resources?
  • Are we drawing from NACADA resources such as monographs or CDs to develop advisor inservice-training, workshops, discussion groups or other on-campus opportunities for advisor development?
  • Are there additional advisor development ideas or resources that we could share with our colleagues in the field?

Planning is underway for an August Webinar, Save Time and Energy: Utilize Existing Resources for Advisor Training and Development, which will highlight creative usage of existing advisor training/development materials by NACADA members, and YOUR INPUT is invited!  Member processes or programs that can inspire creative ideas on how we can "recyle" NACADA and other existing resources for innovative advisor development purposes will be explored in this summer Internet broadcast.

Learn more about this coming event, and contact Leigh Cunningham or Marsha Miller at the NACADA Executive Office and tell us your story today! Submission deadline is April 15.

Emerging Leaders Program
ELP logo.jpb

As explained by NACADA Emerging Leaders Development Team member Nathan Vickers (University of Texas-Austin) in the March 2008 edition of Academic Advising Today, NOW is the time to apply for the 2008-2010 class of NACADA Emerging Leaders and Mentors.

Applications for the 2008-2010 class are available online. The Emerging Leader Program was developed to encourage members from diverse groups to get involved in leadership opportunities within the organization, outfit participants with the skills and tools necessary to pursue elected and appointed leadership positions, increase the number of leaders from diverse groups, and encourage and assist members of underrepresented populations to attend State, Regional, or National Conferences. Emerging Leaders are provided funding to assist them with travel and involvement in the association for the first year of their two-year commitment to the program.

Applications for both the Emerging Leaders and Mentors are due May 1, 2008, with final selection being made by June 2008. For information about the program, including criteria and applications, visit the ELP Website.

Making Career Advising Integral to Academic Advising

Joanne Damminger (Rowan University) and Ken Hughey (Kansas State University) contend that career advising can enhance advisors’ work with students and facilitate students’ career and academic development and decision making. Join Joanne and Ken on May 13 as they discuss:

  • Applying career theories to career advising
  • Integrating career and academic advising
  • Advisor competencies needed for effective career advising
  • The advisor’s role in facilitating students’ academic and career planning

Faculty Advising Seminar

Faculty Advising: Collaborating for Success

Third Annual Seminar

June 19-20, 2008 in Portsmouth, Va.

Since faculty play such an integral role in academic advising, it is imperative that all constituencies work together to assure that faculty have the information, tools and resources to effectively engage in the advising process. This two-day seminar will provide participants with the opportunity to gain essential insights on fostering collaboration among those responsible for advising. In addition, faculty participants will engage in activities to strengthen their advising skills.

The seminar will provide opportunities to:

  • Understand the value of faculty as academic advisors
  • Strengthen advising skills
  • Examine both curricular and pedagogical implications of viewing advising as teaching and learning
  • Explore activities to engage and motivate faculty in advising
  • Consider the various models of exemplary faculty advisor training and development
  • Study the differing needs of faculty advisors with respect to academic discipline and stage in faculty development
  • Discover multiple measures employed to assess faculty advisors and advising programs
  • Review examples of intentional and carefully developed plans of assessment

Areas of study will center around:

  • Definition and Philosophy of Advising; Theoretical Foundation; Components of Advising including Teaching/Learning of Advising and Advising Syllabus as well as Roles and Responsibilities of Faculty Advisors
  • Training and Development Issues - including motivational issues
  • Faculty Rewards and Recognition/Evaluation of Faculty Advising and Faculty Advisors

Kathy Stockwell, Jayne Drake and Marti Hemwall will facilitate instruction and discussion in important advising topics for individuals and teams from public, private and two-year institutions.

For more information on how you and your team of faculty advisors and administrators from your institution can enhance or improve advising on your campus click here. We are looking forward to your participation!

2008 NACADA Academic Advising Summer Institutes

June 22-27 - Portsmouth, Va.

and

July 27- August 1 - Austin, Texas

Join administrators, advisors and faculty advisors for a comprehensive look at academic advising today. Along with general sessions, workshops and topicals, participants develop an Action Plan for enhancing or improving advising on their individual campuses. You might be interested in looking at descriptions of some of the Action Plans prepared for past Institutes. The schedule of sessions for both Institutes have been posted at http://www.nacada.ksu.edu/Events/SummerInst/Schedule.htm.

Plan now to arrange for teams or individuals from your institution to attend in 2008! And YES - A limited number of Wesley R. Habley Scholarships are available for Summer Institute attendance. Applications are available now on the Annual Awards Program Website and may still be submitted for the Austin Institute no later than May 1.

If you are planning to attend the Summer Institute in Portsmouth, you may want to add the Faculty Advising Seminar to your trip. See details above.

Information on hotel accommodations, travel and program details can be found on the Summer Institute Webpage! Register now as participation is limited!

Exemplary Practices Sought in Career Advising

Narratives are being requested as Exemplary Practices of Integrated Career and Academic Advising Centers for possible inclusion in the upcoming Handbook of Career Advising. The intent is to identify academic and career advising centers (or academic and career planning centers) characterized by an integrated approach to helping students with their academic and career planning. A section of the book will present narratives of the centers selected and is intended to provide readers with exemplary practices of integrated academic and career advising centers. Professionals associated with integrated academic and career advising centers are encouraged to submit narratives of their work and accomplishments for publication consideration in the Handbook of Career Advising .

Get Involved with NACADA Commissions & Interest Groups

NACADA members may designate up to four Commissions and/or Interest Groups with which to have official affiliation. This official affiliation primarily identifies those Commissions and/or Interest Groups for which you would have voting privileges, receive activity updates, and be eligible to hold an elected or appointed position within, such as serving on a committee or serving as Chair. Although participation in Commissions and Interest Groups is entirely optional for NACADA members, we encourage you to join those of special interest to you, as they are valuable resources for information and networking.

Click on the links for lists of the current Commissions and Interest Groups. More information on a particular Commission or Interest Group can be reviewed on its individual webpage.

If you would like to designate or change the preferred Commission and/or Interest Group choices with which you would like to be affiliated, please complete this online form. Upon receipt of this information, your membership record will be updated accordingly. If you previously made your selections, but do not recall which Commissions or Interest Groups were designated, you can simply indicate your current preferences via this form and previous choices will be replaced. Please be sure to provide your name and institution information when completing this form so the appropriate member record can be updated. If you have any questions, please contact NACADA at nacada@ksu.edu.

NOTE: Your four selections can be any combination of Commissions and Interest Groups. You can change your Commission and Interest Group affiliations at any time - although you should be aware that this may affect your eligibility for certain awards and elected positions.

Campus Advising Awards

NACADA would like to recognize individuals who receive campus awards in 2008 for outstanding academic advising (faculty or full-time) or advising administration. If you would like to notify NACADA of a colleague who recently received a campus advising award, please provide us with this information by completing the short online submission form on our Website.
