Swirling
to a Degree: The
Ups and Downs of College Transfer |
 |
| Tuesday,
March 25, 2008
A
Live Internet-broadcast Webinar Event
The days of single
college attendance are waning. Current trends in higher
education indicate that today’s college students no longer
feel a need or obligation to attend one college from beginning
to end, but rather find opportunity and excitement in “customizing”
an educational plan with courses from multiple institutions
of higher education. This new multi-institutional enrollment
pattern has attracted a variety of names: “swirling”,
“double dipping”, “mix and match”,
“campus hopping” and many more. Multi-college attendance
can range from a single transfer from one institution to
another to multiple transfers to simultaneous enrollment.
Cost, convenience and technology are among the many reasons
students give for “swirling”, but research shows that with
opportunity comes challenge. Can “swirling” result in a
comprehensive and coherent education? This Kansas State
University College of Education / NACADA-sponsored Webinar
presentation will explore the many issues that surround
“swirling” and suggest ways in which two and four year colleges
can partner to provide strong transfer advising.

| Meet
NACADA's 10,000th Member - Frank Grosso |
 |
Frank
Grosso
Assistant
Dean for Student Affairs
Yale
University School of Nursing
Welcome
to NACADA, Frank! As
the 10,000th person to join NACADA, we'd like to learn a
little bit about you.
What
is your role in the area of academic advising?
As Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, I tell my students
that my role is to assist them in breaking down the barriers
they may encounter during their time here. Those barriers
could be academic, professional, or personal. I have an
open door policy so I can be accessible to them, and assist
them in such things as course planning, study strategies,
professional development, career planning, disability issues,
and general student support.
What
is your educational background? I have a
Bachelor's in Economics from Eastern Connecticut State University,
a Master's in Higher Education Administration from The George
Washington University, and will receive my Ph.D. in Education
Administration from The Catholic University of America this
May.
What
other professional experiences have you had? I
have been an Assistant Dean for Student Affairs for two
institutions (Yale University and the Catholic University
of America). I have also worked in university development
prior to that. And while I was finishing my Master's degree
at GWU, I worked for the Peace Corps' Fellows USA Program
which matches returning volunteers to universities across
the country so that they can get a subsidized Master's in
education and teaching certificate in exchange for working
in hard-to-staff schools.
Why
did you choose student affairs for your career, and how
long have you been in the field? I always
enjoyed higher education. I was involved in student government
as an undergraduate and saw how much the faculty, staff
and administration loved what they were doing. After graduating
with a BA in Economics and working in the financial world
for a year or so, I decided that a career in higher education
was what I truly wanted. I've been in higher education for
about 14 years, and in student affairs for the last 10 of
them.
Why
did you decide to join NACADA? It is an
incredible organization with wonderful resources. The university
structure and curriculum is constantly changing, along with
the backgrounds of the student body. You have to keep up
with the ever-changing demands. The forums, conferences,
and resources fostered by NACADA are extremely helpful in
staying on top of the changing trends.
Have
there been any NACADA resources (publications, website,
advice from other members, etc.) that you have found to
be useful? All of them are very helpful.
The Academic Advising Comprehensive Handbook, has been an
especially good resource.

Ensuring Advisor
Success: Mastering the Art of Advising through the First
Year of Advising and Beyond
Thursday,
April 17, 2008
A
Live Internet-broadcast Webinar Event
Are
you a new advisor at the beginning of this exciting career?
Are you responsible for the training and development
of advisors in your unit or at your institution?
Then this broadcast is for you! |
 |
| Key
points for this Kansas State University College of Education
/ NACADA-sponsored Webinar presentation by Pat Folsom
and Jennifer Joslin (University of Iowa)
will include:
- Advisors new to the profession
need extended, ongoing developmental support to master
the art of advising.
- Developmental support should
extend past initial training to address issues that arise
as new advisors begin working with students and experience
seasonal advising issues (e.g. registration periods, drop/add
periods).
- To grow, new advisors must
know where they are going. They must have clear expectations/learning
outcomes for what they should know and be able to do by
certain points in their careers.
- The NACADA New Advisor Guidebook
and the New Advisor Chart included in it provide the means
by which new advisors and the people responsible for their
training can create developmental road maps.
|
 |
Join
Pat and Jennifer on April 17 to:
- learn about and understand the
purpose of the New Advisor Growth Chart.
- learn to use the chart to create
developmental goals for yourself or for your advisor development
program.
- Identify the issues to be considered
in creating a developmental road map.
- learn about tools you can use
(from the New Advisor Guidebook and other sources)
to make the journey.

Annual Conference: Chicago, October 1- 4
Over 700 Presentation

If you submitted a proposal, you will receive
notification of its status by mid-April. Our thanks go to
Ann Anderson and
her 2008 Program Committee, NACADA Commission Chairs, and
the hundreds of readers who made the proposal selection
process run smoothly.

insights on fostering collaboration among those responsible
for advising. In addition, faculty participants will engage
in activities to strengthen their advising skills.
Kathy
Stockwell, Jayne
Drake, and Marti
Hemwall will facilitate instruction and
discussion in important advising topics for individuals
and teams from public, private and two-year institutions.

The
NACADA Commission and Interest Group Division has received
proposals to form three new Potential Interest Groups —
Advising in Interdisciplinary
Programs, Doctoral
Students, and Graduate-Level
Courses in Academic Advising. In addition,
History of Academic Advising
will continue as a Potential Interest Group this next year.
A Web page has been created for each of these groups on

to participate in the annual Commission and Interest Group
Fair held during the Conference. Plan to visit these tables
at the CIG Fair and attend the organizational meeting of
the new group(s) of interest to you.
If you have questions
or would like to become involved with one of these groups
prior to the fall Conference, please contact the Chair of
that group directly. To designate one or more of these Potential
Interest Groups as one of your four chosen Commission or
