Advising
2.0: Utilizing Technology Effectively for Campus-wide
Advising - February 12-13, 2009
This
seminar provides an opportunity for academic advisors
to get hands on experience with Web 2.0 technologies.
Each participant will have the opportunity to plan
for the use of new technologies in their work and
get feedback on their plans. Join
us as we tackle questions together such as:
How can I use technology to get better
data for assessment of student learning outcomes?
How can I learn to select, use, and
manage technology in my advising office?
How can I learn new ways to use technology
in academic advising?

7th
Annual Academic Advising Administrators' Institute
- February 15-17, 2009

for participants to find guidance in the development
of an action plan for improvement or change on your
campus and network and learn from administrators from
a variety of institutional types and sizes.

The Small Group Discussions will focus
on three areas, New Advising Administrators (less
than three years), Experienced Advising Administrators
(more than three years) and Administrators (Dean,
VP, Provost) Directing Multiple areas, including advising.
Enjoy this opportunity to network with colleagues
who are facing the same challenges on their campuses!
Faculty Consultations

6th
Annual Assessment of Academic Advising Institute -
February 18-20, 2009
The
Assessment of Academic Advising Institute provides
a foundation for participants regarding assessment's
critical elements, purposes, and processes. Through
presentations and small group discussion/working sessions,
participants explore strategies for the assessment
of academic advising programs-including establishing
clear goals and outcomes and developing assessment
measures for these goals and outcomes. The Institute
provides participants with an understanding of the
cyclical and ongoing nature of assessment. Most importantly,
the Institute offers participants the opportunity
to work with colleagues from similar institutional
types and with other professionals and experts in
the fields of advising and assessment to develop comprehensive
assessment plans for their respective campuses. Join
other colleagues as they work through the process
of making assessment a success. Bring a team from
your institution to get your assessment program up
and running!
Visit
the website
to see a tentative schedule.
It
is critical that you book your lodging as early as
possible. The deadline for receiving the
discounted hotel rate is January
16, 2009, but the hotel

In
recent years NACADA has revisited its definition, approach,
and use of research to advance the field of academic advising.
Specifically, the NACADA Research Committee and
the Taskforce for Infusing Research Throughout NACADA
have studied the ways in which advisors and administrators
consume and produce research. In this Online event, Joshua
Smith (2006-2008 Research Committee Chair
and current Taskforce Chair) and Wendy
Troxel (Research Committee Member) will
assist you in discovering the multiple ways that advisors
and administrators can become involved in research that

Emerging
Leaders Meet in Chicago |
|
The
Diversity Committee developed the NACADA Emerging
Leaders Program to encourage members from diverse
groups to get involved in leadership opportunities within
the organization, outfit participants with the skills and
tools necessary to pursue elected and appointed leadership
positions, increase the number of leaders from diverse groups,
and encourage and assist members of underrepresented populations
to attend State, Regional, or National Conferences.
Members of the
inaugural 2007-2009 Class, now one year
into their mentoring relationships, have already taken exciting
leadership steps in activities such as serving on various
NACADA Committees and Advisory Boards, Chairing a Commission,
presenting at Regional and Annual Conferences, writing for
Academic Advising Today, and presenting a Webinar.
The Diversity
Committee and the Emerging Leaders Development Team are
proud to announce that the 2008-2010 ELP Class
mentoring partners met throughout the Annual Conference
in Chicago for development, conversation, and group building.
The following partnerships will continue for two years:
|
| |
Emerging Leader |
Mentor |
|
"I
am so honored to have been selected as a NACADA Emerging
Leader. The encouragement from my mentor, the other ELP
participants, and the staff members in the NACADA Executive
Office has fueled me with new energy and confidence in my
everyday work. I am delighted to have direct support from
advising professionals who have such breadth and depth of
expertise (not to mention that they are kind-hearted and
fun!). I am confident that my participation in this program
will help me be a change agent on my campus and within the
NACADA organization."
- Susan Anderson
"Becoming
an Emerging Leader Program Mentor not only affords me an
opportunity to 'pay it forward,' but also, as I discovered
at the most recent Annual Conference, this program offers
much more! Just over a year ago, when I was elected Commission
Chair, I was incredibly grateful for the camaraderie and
support the previous Chair offered to me (not to mention
the fabulous folks at the NACADA Executive Office). Now
I am able to offer support and encouragement to an Emerging
Leader, who, in the short few weeks I have known her, exhibits
amazing leadership qualities and talent. And, the added
bonus that I had not counted on - as a member of this program,
I am able to collaborate with a whole group of fantastic,
talented ELP mentors and mentees. How much better can a
program get?"
- Lisa Peck
“Visiting
with Les was like catching up with an old friend. After
talking for an hour I felt like we had known each other
for years. We share a wide array of common experiences,
interests, and future goals. I really look forward to collaborating
with Les this year. We already have several publication
and presentation ideas in the works.”

Ten Region Conferences provide great opportunities
for you to share best practices, research results, and program
ideas with your colleagues. Region Conferences are great
introductions to the NACADA organization and, in fact, approximately
40% of participants report that their attendance at regional
conferences are their first face-to-face experience with
NACADA. Enthusiasm for enhancing the quality of advising
and advising programs are very apparent at all Region Conferences.
Utilize the online presentation proposal submission system
to submit your ideas for a session and plan to attend the
Region Conference of your choice!

Join
us! Join administrators, advisors and faculty advisors for
a comprehensive look at academic advising today. Along with
general sessions, workshops and topicals, participants develop
an Action Plan for enhancing or improving advising on their
individual campuses. You might be interested in looking
at descriptions of some of the Action
Plans prepared for past Institutes.
Plan
now! Arrange for teams or individuals from your institution
to attend in 2009! Kansas City will be the site of the
June 28-July 3 Institute, and July 26-July 31 is the tentative
timeline for the second Institute. Your choice of dates
or locations! Many institutions have varying summer schedules
and the Institute has limited enrollment/faculty ratios,
so we offer the Institute two times each summer. So, choose
the date or location which fits your needs! We welcome you
at either one! Register soon to ensure your participation! Program
outlines are available on the Summer Institute webpage
and information will be posted as it becomes available!
A
limited number of scholarships are available for Summer
Institute attendance. Applications will be available in December
on the Annual Awards Program website and
will be due by early March. |

Journal to Celebrate Association's 30th Anniversary |
The
30th Anniversary of NACADA will take place in 2009
and two issues of the NACADA Journal will focus
on the Association's history. As part of this celebration,
we are asking anyone who has a humorous recollection associated
with their NACADA experience to write a brief summary
and send it to Virginia
Gordon before November
30, 2008. The authors will use as many recollections
as space permits.

| Network
With Your Colleagues -- Join a Commission or Interest Group!
|
|
A great way to
network with your colleagues is to join
a NACADA Commission or Interest Group (IG).
Members can choose any combination of Commissions and IGs
- up to a total of four (4) selections - in which they would
like to have official membership. This official affiliation
primarily identifies those Commissions and/or IGs for which
you would have voting privileges, receive periodic electronic
newsletters and updates, and be eligible to hold an elected
or appointed position within, such as serving on a committee
or serving as chair. Please note that you can be informally
involved with as many other Commissions or IGs as you like,
such as joining list serves, attending meetings, etc.
We
encourage you to review the list of available Commissions
and Interest
Groups,
and join those of interest to you. Those of you who recently
attended the Annual Conference in Chicago had an opportunity
to talk with Commission and Interest Group Chairs at the
Commission and Interest Group Fair held the Thursday morning
during breakfast.
If
you wish to change your preferred Commission and/or IG choices,
you can easily do so online by completing this online
form. If you previously made your selections
but do not recall which Commissions or IGs were designated,
you can simply indicate your current preferences via this
form and previous choices will be replaced. Please be sure
to include the requested identification information so the
appropriate member record is updated.
Note:
Your official Commission designations will determine the
Commission Chair elections in which you will be eligible
to vote in the 2009 elections.
|
| Commission
Status Granted to Two Interest Groups |
Congratulations to the Distance
Education Advising Interest Group and
Peer Advising
& Mentoring Interest Group for being granted
commission status recently at the 2008 fall leadership
meetings in Chicago. This change is effective immediately
and each group's website has been updated to reflect this
action.
These newest Commissions will elect
Chairs in the upcoming 2009 elections to take office after
the 2009 Annual Conference in San Antonio next fall. In
the meantime, Bobbi Thomas
will serve as Interim Chair of the Distance Education
Advising Commission while Dana
Zahorik will serve as Interim Chair of the
Peer Advising & Mentoring Commission.
