On November 6, NACADA Emerging Leader Jose
Rodriguez (Florida International University) will
explore the art and science of communication, including
specific behaviors and theories designed to elicit significant
conversations. Jose will discuss communication theory, verbal
and nonverbal communication, and counseling theory and practice,
with the intent of providing advisors with specific practices
and theories they can use in their day-to-day lives. He
will explore how significant conversations with students
can also be a transformational experience that goes beyond
prescriptive and developmental advising.

the NACADA Research Committee and the Taskforce
for Infusing Research Throughout NACADA have studied
the ways in which advisors and administrators consume and

Smith (2006-2008 Research Committee Chair
and current Taskforce Chair) and Wendy

to share best practices, research results, and program ideas
with your colleagues. Region Conferences are great introductions
to the NACADA organization and, in fact, approximately 40%
of participants report that their attendance at regional
conferences are their first face-to-face experience with
NACADA. Enthusiasm for enhancing the quality of advising

Join
us! Join administrators, advisors and faculty advisors
for a comprehensive look at academic advising today. Along
with general sessions, workshops and topicals, participants
develop an Action Plan for enhancing or improving advising
on their individual campuses. You might be interested in
looking at descriptions of some of the Action
Plans prepared for past Institutes.
Plan
now! Arrange for teams or individuals from
your institution to attend in 2009! Kansas City will be
the site of the June 28-July 3 Institute. July 26-July
31 is the tentative timeline for the second Institute.
A
limited number of scholarships are available
for Summer Institute attendance. Applications will be available
in December on the Annual Awards Program website and
will be due by early March.
Your
choice of dates or locations! Many institutions
have varying summer schedules and the Institute has limited
enrollment/faculty ratios, so we offer the Institute two
times each summer. So, choose the date or location which
fits your needs! We welcome you at either one! Register
soon to ensure your participation! Program outlines

and information will be posted as it becomes available!

Commission and Interest Group Conference Activities

Annual Conference will be an excellent opportunity for you
to collaborate with Commission and Interest Group members.
- Join us for the Commission
and Interest Group Fair on Thursday,
October 2, 7:15-8:15 a.m. Visit the various
tables and converse with the Chairs and members of the
Commissions and Interest Groups.
- Annual
Commission and Interest Group Meetings
are scheduled throughout the Conference. Check your program
for those meetings of interest to you, or visit the meeting
schedule summary.
- Learn what is going on in the Commissions and Interest
Groups - projects, activities, list serve discussions,
new initiatives!
- Volunteer to help with activities or serve on a
committee within a Commission or Interest Group.
- Consider running for leadership positions within
the Commissions.
- Meet and collaborate with colleagues on future conference
presentations or articles for the Clearinghouse
or Academic Advising Today.
- Service to Commission awards are given by some of
the Commissions - investigate and nominate a fellow
Commission member!
- Attend one of the "Hot
Topics" sessions presented by Commissions
and Interest Groups during the last hour of the Conference
on Saturday, October 4. Check your Conference Program
for the specific meeting room for each session.

Research Grant Available! |
| The
NACADA Research Committee announces a Request For Proposals
(RFP) for NACADA grants that
support advising research. Grants
up to $5,000 are available to support a
single-year proposal. Practicing professionals (administrators
and faculty), as well as graduate students seeking support
for dissertation research, are eligible.
The Research Committee
has two deadlines for 2009 funding proposals: November
1, 2008 and March

Leadership to Take Office Following Annual Conference |
| Following
the Annual Conference in Chicago, the newly elected NACADA
Leadership will take office for the 2008-2009
leadership year. For a complete directory of NACADA's leadership,

Casey
Self (Arizona State University) will serve
as NACADA's President for the next year,
while Jayne Drake
(Temple University) takes over as Vice President.
Kazi Mamun (University
of California-Riverside), Celeste
Pardee (University of Arizona), and Kathy
Stockwell (Fox Valley Technical College)
join the Board of Directors for the 2008-2011 term. Along
with Casey Self and Jayne Drake, the other continuing members
of the Board include Sharon
Aiken-Wisniewski (University of Utah), Rob
Mossack (Lipscomb University), Terry

Robbins (Bucknell University).
The
Regional Division welcomes Kyle
