Significant Conversations: The Art and Science of Communication in Transformational Advising

On November 6, NACADA Emerging Leader Jose Rodriguez (Florida International University) will explore the art and science of communication, including specific behaviors and theories designed to elicit significant conversations. Jose will discuss communication theory, verbal and nonverbal communication, and counseling theory and practice, with the intent of providing advisors with specific practices and theories they can use in their day-to-day lives. He will explore how significant conversations with students can also be a transformational experience that goes beyond prescriptive and developmental advising.

Ten Region Conferences provide great opportunities for you to share best practices, research results, and program ideas with your colleagues. Region Conferences are great introductions to the NACADA organization and, in fact, approximately 40% of participants report that their attendance at regional conferences are their first face-to-face experience with NACADA.  Enthusiasm for enhancing the quality of advising and advising programs are very apparent at all Region Conferences. 2009 NACADA Academic Advising Summer Institutes!

Join us! Join administrators, advisors and faculty advisors for a comprehensive look at academic advising today. Along with general sessions, workshops and topicals, participants develop an Action Plan for enhancing or improving advising on their individual campuses. You might be interested in looking at descriptions of some of the Action Plans prepared for past Institutes. 

Plan now! Arrange for teams or individuals from your institution to attend in 2009!  Kansas City will be the site of the June 28-July 3 Institute.  July 26-July 31 is the tentative timeline for the second Institute.

A limited number of scholarships are available for Summer Institute attendance. Applications will be available in December on the Annual Awards Program website and will be due by early March. 

Your choice of dates or locations! Many institutions have varying summer schedules and the Institute has limited enrollment/faculty ratios, so we offer the Institute two times each summer. So, choose the date or location which fits your needs! We welcome you at either one! Register soon to ensure your participation! Program outlines are available on the Summer Institute webpage and information will be posted as it becomes available!

NEW and IMPROVED Interface Page for Webcast CDs!

In response to our viewer requests, NACADA IT staff have expanded the Webinar CDs to allow the event handout to be included on the CD.  The new format is being used for our recordings beginning with our first Webinar in the 2008-2009 season.

Our opening Webinar for 2008-2009, Save Time and Energy: Utilize Existing Resources for Advisor Training and Development - now available on CD - was designed to:

  • assist advisors and advising administrators in understanding the three areas that advisor training should address: conceptual, informational, relational;
  • explain the essential steps for developing the content of an effective advisor training and development program;
  • share the most common forms of on-campus advisor training;
  • highlight creative resource usage by NACADA members; and
  • demonstrate how to navigate the free resources available in the NACADA Clearinghouse of Academic Advising Resources.

It will serve as a foundation for our Conducting Professional Development Publication Package.

Commission and Interest Group Conference Activities in Chicago

The Annual Conference will be an excellent opportunity for you to collaborate with Commission and Interest Group members.

  • Join us for the Commission and Interest Group Fair on Thursday, October 2, 7:15-8:15 a.m. Visit the various tables and converse with the Chairs and members of the Commissions and Interest Groups.
  • Annual Commission and Interest Group Meetings are scheduled throughout the Conference. Check your program for those meetings of interest to you, or visit the meeting schedule summary.
    • Learn what is going on in the Commissions and Interest Groups - projects, activities, list serve discussions, new initiatives!
    • Volunteer to help with activities or serve on a committee within a Commission or Interest Group.
    • Consider running for leadership positions within the Commissions.
    • Meet and collaborate with colleagues on future conference presentations or articles for the Clearinghouse or Academic Advising Today.
    • Service to Commission awards are given by some of the Commissions - investigate and nominate a fellow Commission member!
  • Attend one of the "Hot Topics" sessions presented by Commissions and Interest Groups during the last hour of the Conference on Saturday, October 4. Check your Conference Program for the specific meeting room for each session.
  • Commission-sponsored presentations are scheduled throughout the Conference. Check your Program for these highlighted sessions. Here's your chance to see some excellent presentations!
  • Congratulate the Commission and Interest Group members who have received various NACADA awards! (Visit the Websites below -- click on a specific Commission or Interest Group, and then on the "Awards" bullet in the left column.)
  • Attend the initial meeting of one of the potential interest groups trying to get established or stop by their tables at the Commission and Interest Group Fair. See the conference program for the date, time and location of these meetings.

NACADA Research Grant Available!

The NACADA Research Committee announces a Request For Proposals (RFP) for NACADA grants that support advising researchGrants up to $5,000 are available to support a single-year proposal. Practicing professionals (administrators and faculty), as well as graduate students seeking support for dissertation research, are eligible.

The Research Committee has two deadlines for 2009 funding proposals: November 1, 2008 and March 15, 2009. Click here for information regarding research grants.

 

New Leadership to Take Office Following Annual Conference

Following the Annual Conference in Chicago, the newly elected NACADA Leadership will take office for the 2008-2009 leadership year. For a complete directory of NACADA's leadership, visit the web

Casey Self (Arizona State University) will serve as NACADA's President for the next year, while Jayne Drake (Temple University) takes over as Vice President. Kazi Mamun (University of California-Riverside), Celeste Pardee (University of Arizona), and Kathy Stockwell (Fox Valley Technical College) join the Board of Directors for the 2008-2011 term. Along with Casey Self and Jayne Drake, the other continuing members of the Board include Sharon Aiken-Wisniewski (University of Utah), Rob Mossack (Lipscomb University), Terry Musser (Penn State University), and Rich Robbins (Bucknell University). 

The Regional Division welcomes Kyle Ellis, as the newly elected Division Representative, joining Gail Stepina as the current appointed Division Representative. The incoming Region Chairs include Kathie Sindt (Region 2), Doug Waddell (Region 4), Pat Mason-Browne (Region 6), and Brett McFarlane (Region 8).  These new Chairs will join the continuing Chairs: Susan Kolls (Region 1), David Goss (Region 3), Lynn Freeman (Region 5), John Paul Regalado (Region 7), Deborah Nakashima (Region 9), and Dawn Fettig (Region 10).

The new leadership within the Administrative Division includes Joshua Smith as the newly elected Division Representative, with Skip Crownhart continuing as the appointed Division Representative.  The newly elected Committee Chairs include Rodney Mondor (Membership), Joanne Damminger (Finance), and Peter Hagen (Research) who join continuing Chairs Alison Hoff (Member Career Services), Susan Fread (Awards), Jane Jacobson (Diversity), and Albert Matheny (Professional Development).

Serving the Commission and Interest Group Division will be Jennifer Joslin, the incoming appointed Division Representative who will be joined by Victor Macaruso, the continuing elected Division Representative. 2009 NACADA Leadership Nominations Due

Election information and printed nomination forms will be available in the NACADA booth in the Exhibits area in Riverside Center at the Annual Conference in Chicago and also will be printed in the back of the Conference Program. Information is also available online for the 2009 NACADA Leadership elections, including a list of positions to be elected, eligibility criteria, general election information, and an online nomination recommendation form

Nomination forms can be submitted either electronically, sent by fax or mail, or turned in at the Conference. All nominations will be due to the Executive Office by Friday, October 31, 2008.

NEW - A Family Guide to Academic Advising (2nd Edition)

A Family Guide for Academic Advising is ideal to share with family members who:

This newly revised guide from the National Academic Advising Association and the National Resource Center for The First-Year Experience and Students in Transition offers an easy-to-read overview of this critically important educational program. Written by a college faculty member and a veteran academic advisor, the Guide describes the role of the academic advisor, outlines the advising process, and highlights important academic issues facing new college students.
