Subject: 2004 Survey Data Summary

One of my goals for the Probation/Dismissal/Reinstatement (PDR) Issues Interest Group for 2004-05 is to facilitate the sharing of information among institutions and programs on issues related to working with students in academic difficulty.  So many of us are dealing with our own students on probation, at-risk, or dismissed, yet wondering if what we are experiencing is comparable to others across the country.

In November 2004, I asked the PDR Interest Group members and PDR list serve members to voluntarily respond with data from their institution on the following three questions:

  1. What is the average percentage of students on probation after a term (semester, quarter, etc.)?
  2. What is the average percentage of those probationary students that are not retained after the next term (i.e. recessed, dismissed, suspended, or left voluntarily)?
  3. How many total students are in the institution, program, dept., etc. for the data given in the questions above?

There were many responses to the questions (thank you to those who responded!), and from those responses, I put together the spreadsheet of information shown below. While the data may be somewhat helpful for comparison purposes, there are also difficulties with it that must be noted.

  1. First, there are varying definitions of what constitutes "probation" at institutions.
  2. Second, probation data is reported differently across institutions. For example, some institutions report on numbers of students on probation who are enrolled the next term, and others report on numbers placed on probation, regardless of enrollment status.
  3. Third, not all programs track the retention of students that have been placed on probation. If retention is tracked, some report forced departure due to dismissal or suspension while others report both forced and voluntary departure.

The lack of standardization of PDR data across institutions is an issue for us, yet I hope that the comparison data I have compiled is a useful glimpse into PDR programs data.
