Advising and Academic Coaching Interest Group
Over
the past few years, there has been a substantial increase in the
number of people requesting different forms of “life coaching.”
Although
a portion of academic advising focuses on educational planning/registration,
a greater portion of time should be spent:
- Understanding
the current state of the student, then identifying and developing
strategies to move towards the future;
- Helping
students develop an educational plan based on assessment of abilities,
aspirations, interests, and values;
- Identifying
various sources to help students set goals and achieve those goals;
and
- Teaching
students to assume responsibility and be held accountable for
their actions and decisions.
The
function of the Advising and Academic Coaching Potential Interest
Group will be to address these areas more in-depth in a variety
of ways. The main focus will be to address these issues by:
- Developing
a definition that combines advising and coaching;
- Providing
resources (workshops, sessions at conferences, on-line materials)
for members to enhance coaching abilities;
- Developing
a listserve for members to issues, current trends, etc. on advising
and coaching; and
- Creating
partnerships with organizations that focus on different aspects
of coaching.
In
the future, the Advising and Academic Coaching Potential Interest
Group will seek partnerships with other Commissions and Interest
Groups (for example, the Advisor Training & Development Commission)
to provide support and services that are beneficial to members of
both groups.
