Pre-Health Professions Advisor

Position Description

The Pre-Health Professions Advisor is responsible to deliver all Pre-Health Professions advising to the students of the College of Arts and the College of Health Professions. The Pre-Health Professions Advisor will provide advising services to students wishing to explore health professions fields, to prepare for entry into prospective fields, and to apply to professional and graduate programs.

Duties

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide academic advising services to first and second year students as needed
  • Attend all new-student orientation, open house, and recruitment events as needed
  • Provide department chairs and dean of CAS/CHP with updates regarding advisement of first and second year students
  • Assist with developing Pre-Health Professions departmental webpages
  • Provide academic advising at freshman and transfer orientation sessions.
  • Disseminate information on UNE policies and procedures as it pertains to degree completion
  • Provide academic information to prospective students through participation in Admissions recruiting events, individualized appointments and electronic means
  • Provide appropriate referrals to academic departments, student support programs and other university resources as necessary to help students achieve their academic goals
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree, in Biology or a related science/health field preferred, plus up to 1 to 2 years experience working with health professions students, or 1-2 years of relevant experience in academic advising in a higher education environment, or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired.
  • Capacity to work with and understand undergraduates
  • Experience collaborating or working with the health professions community
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, written and oral communication skills
  • An understanding of and preference for collaborative approaches to problem solving.
  • Experience with record keeping
  • Willingness to work both autonomously and collaboratively with team members
  • Strong technological skills in Microsoft Office and Banner, or similar data system

Position Description:

The Academic Advisor serves as a member of the academic advising team. The advisor's primary role is to support student success, retention, and graduation. He or she provides effective student-centered academic advising to first-year, upper-class, and transfer students. The person in this position advocates for and assists students, with a strong emphasis on first-year-student issues and programming. The advisor serves as a liaison between department faculty and the Office of Student Services.

Duties:

Duties include monitoring academic progress, working with "at risk" students, using our Faculty Communication Advising Tool, and assisting with new-student orientation sessions. The advisor will participate in recruitment activities such as Open Houses and Admissions Welcome Days. The person in this position also designs and administers programs to promote the academic success of students from first-year through graduation. He or she reviews records for completion of degree requirements using the Degree Audit Reporting System (DARS). Other responsibilities include assisting students with transitioning to college, career planning, and course registration using the Banner Registration System. He or she may also have the opportunity to teach a seminar for first-year Bouve© students. The advisor is responsible for formulating and recommending policies and procedures to effectively administer OSS academic functions.

Required Qualifications:

A Masters degree with related experience is required. Candidates with a health-care background, higher-education experience, or related training are encouraged to apply. Strong advising, interpersonal, analytical, organizational, and customer-service skills required. The candidate needs strong PC skills (including a working knowledge of Microsoft Office) and should enjoy working in a fast-paced environment. Prior knowledge and best practices in student development, retention and academic support programs are also required. Candidates must have experience in, or a demonstrated commitment to, working with a diverse student population.

Continuing Education Counselor II (UCP VI) Center for Continuing Studies Bachelor of General Studies & Non-Degree Studies University of Connecticut, Stamford Campus The University of Connecticut, Center for Continuing Studies, Stamford Campus, is seeking an Academic Counselor to work for the Bachelor of General Studies and Non-degree Studies programs. The Counselor works as part of a team to recruit, admit and academically advise returning adult students and working professionals for the CCS degree completion programs. These programs are designed for people with an Associates degree or 60 credit hours from regionally accredited institutions who wish to finish their undergraduate degree at UConn. The Counselor also serves as an advisor to non-degree students. The Counselor will be part of the UConn Stamford Campus as well as the UConn Center for Continuing Studies and may serve on various committees for both the campus and for the program.

Required Qualifications:

A Master's degree in counseling or in other appropriate discipline with 2 -4 years working with adult students in higher education, academic advising or counseling experience. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Demonstrated ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment with regard to program operations and student-faculty relations. Demonstrated ability to engage with students in discussions concerning educational needs and options in an informative manner. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with both local and University wide colleagues; ability to work irregular and flexible hours and to travel.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in academically advising returning adults students in an institution of higher education. Experience as a returning adult student or knowledge of principles of adult education; experience working with international returning adult students. Some knowledge of and experience in curriculum assessment; and knowledge of state and regional demographics and industry and its education needs and resources. This position reports to the Director for Bachelor Degree Completion Programs, Center for Continuing Studies. Some evening hours are required. This is a full time, year long end-date appointment which may be renewed annually. Salary in low $50’s and includes full benefits. Position Description:

The Academic Advisor is responsible for providing academic support, and guidance and monitoring academic progress for students from freshman year through graduation. Provides information regarding college and university policies, co-op scheduling, course selection, pre-registration, registration and academic progress. The advisor works with the same group of students over a four to five year period; and, each year through continuous interaction identifies developmental needs for the class level. In response to this, the Academic Advisor provides appropriate programming, each year for their class. The Class Advisor supervises and works closely with the Student Services Coordinator to develop strategies to improve retention. The Advisor is the major academic support person with whom an undergraduate student in the CBA has contact. The Advisor becomes a mentor and guides the student throughout their academic career. A strong student/advisor relationship enhances the student experience at NU, adds to their success, and the student is more likely retained until they graduate. This will in turn contribute to their becoming strong alum of the institution. Since the average case load for advisors in the CBA can be over 500 students, the stress and demand factor for the Advisor is extremely high.

Duties:

Works with retention processes: FACT an early warning system and Academic Probation to assist students who are experiencing academic difficulties. During the senior year, students are required to meet with the advisor to conduct a senior interview which results in a correct and coherent Senior Clearance Plan which students use as a contract in their final semester to complete their degree. Then in January, May and August, performs final clearances of seniors in preparation for graduation. Advisor will prepare and conduct workshops and teaches a one credit course helping CBA students to chart their academic progress and skill development. Advisor will be involved with all orientations and various management tasks within the Undergraduate Business Programs Office.

Required Qualifications:

Masters degree required preferably in counseling, human services or higher education (or equivalent experience advising in a college/university.) Minimum of three-four years work or educational experience; preferably in higher education. Will consider related graduate work. Must enjoy working with students and helping guide them through their academics to graduation. Excellent computer, written, and oral communication skills required. Documentation is required of all student contact. Individual must work well under pressure and have excellent management skills, plus demonstrated counseling ability utilizing development theory to create a student-centered academic environment. Individual must demonstrate the ability to supervise others, take initiative, and organize effectively. Must be detail-oriented and have the ability to work with precision and be able to keep calm under pressure. Person also must be able to empathize with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Presentation skills are required. Individual needs to be able to work as an integral member of a team as well as have leadership qualities. Manage college wide processes including, graduation clearance, academic audits, DARS and academic standing reports. Must possess ability to work collaboratively with students, faculty, parents and university-wide administrators.
