Position Description:

The School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment in the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering seeks a full-time Academic Success Specialist to provide 1:1 as well as group academic advising, recruitment/retention, and academic success support functions to students to ensure ongoing successful progress to completion of an undergraduate degree program in Construction or Civil, Environmental & Sustainable Engineering. Posted Rate of Pay: $35,085 - $40,000/year; DOE DAYS AND SCHEDULE: Monday-Friday 8:00AM-5:00PM, to include some night and weekend hours when applicable.

Duties:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: provide academic advisement to students in the undergraduate programs; perform administrative tasks related to student enrollment, registration, orientation, and graduation checkout; maintain student records using an electronic student database; maintain class schedule; organize and participate in student recruitment and retention activities; consult with staff, students, and others to provide technical advice and problem solving assistance, Utilize eAdvisor and work closely with students to identify all academic options including degrees, extracurricular activities, study abroad programs, research, and professional field experience; provide support and counsel to students in selection of options best suited to student's goals, interests and skills; connect students with academic and personal resources. Assist with academic program development and implementation and monitor student academic progress through the use of a variety of reporting tools. Interpret and inform students of University, school, and program level academic policies and procedures. Serve as program liaison to current and prospective students, faculty, staff, and external groups on issues related to academic success and assisting students with resolving academic issues. Work collaboratively with academic units and services throughout the university to facilitate comprehensive student support; utilize a variety of university data to promote student academic success.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Counseling or closely related field AND two (2) years previous experience in one or more of the following: advising, student recruitment/retention, related student services, teaching in an institution of higher education; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Preferred Qualifications:

Masters degree in higher education or related field. Demonstrated experience in: college level academic advising; working with undergraduate and diverse student populations and university faculty and staff; use of student information computer systems (i.e., PeopleSoft/Oasis). Demonstrated knowledge of: university curriculum and scheduling; current issues and theories in public and higher education and college advising; use of computer programs including internet; Microsoft Office applications (i.e. Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and Outlook); data retrieval (i.e. Data warehouse or MyReports); and student degree auditing reports (i.e., DARS). Experience with designing presentation materials; giving oral presentations; and organizing/planning special events; developing and maintaining effective professional working relationships. Effective verbal and written communication skills in public and interpersonal settings.

Academic Advisor

START Center

Westminster College

Position Description

This position is new to the START Center and Westminster College. The position's primary focus will be on transfer student programming and advising.

Duties

Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Develop, implement and coordinate a transfer student advising model that effectively addresses the needs of Westminster College's transfer student population;
  • Provide early contacts, advising, registration and follow-up with prospective and new transfer students;
  • Serve as primary liaison for transfer students with the admissions office, specifically transfer admissions counselors; Coordinate with the Registrar's office regarding transfer equivalencies, degree requirements and college academic policies; Coordinate transfer student orientations with faculty, deans and school offices;
  • Attend and present information as requested at admissions events for transfer students;
  • Visit SLCC and other institutions to provide preliminary transfer advising on-site in collaboration with the Admissions office; Assist with retention tracking and follow-up of new transfer students through at least their first year;
  • Coordinate with the Career Resource Center in relation to programming for transfer students;
  • Responsible for transfer student START Center web-site content;
  • Provide support for International student advising, Winter @ Westminster advising, and USSA/winter athlete advising;
  • Support other START Center and Student Development Division programs and activities as requested;
  • All other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and some graduate level coursework
  • At least three years of related experience, which may include successful forms of counseling in or out of the field of education; Ability to perform and coordinate administrative functions with a history of progressively increased responsibility;
  • Good organizational and writing skills;
  • Ability to resolve logistical problems efficiently, effectively, creatively, and independently;
  • Ability to operate computer software, e.g. word processing, spreadsheet, and database management (Microsoft Office preferred);
  • Possess professional standards of ethics and confidentiality;
  • Must possess demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with students, staff, faculty, parents and college-wide administrators;
  • Person also must be able to effectively work with individuals from diverse backgrounds;
  • Presentation skills are required; Individual needs to be able to work as an integral member of a team as well as demonstrate leadership qualities;
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision;
  • Ability to work flexible hours including occasional nights and weekends;
  • Candidate must have a sense of humor.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in Education, Counseling, Psychology, Advising or other related field;

At least two years academic advising or related experience in the field of higher education
