Position Description:
The College of Engineering at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, seeks an experienced and dynamic professional to serve as Program Director of Engineering Diversity Programs. The Program Director will work with the College of Engineering administrators and faculty and other University units to identify and recruit students of diverse backgrounds, provide leadership and support for the development and implementation of programs and services designed to promote student development and academic success and to promote a campus climate supportive of student development. The Program Director will also participate and provide support in the development and management of externally funded projects which involve engineering diversity programs.
Duties:

Required Qualifications:
The position is a full-time, 12-month appointment and requires the following:
- Bachelor of Science degree
- Minimum of 5 years experience in student development or related area plus relevant work experience in engineering, science, or related technical field
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds
Preferred Qualifications:
In addition, a Master's Degree and demonstrated abilities in student affairs, counseling and advising, conflict resolution, program development and supervision are preferred.

Academic Coordinator for Classic and Math/Science Upward Bound

Position Description:
Anticipated start date of Nov. 16, 2009 Appalachian State University seeks two creative and enthusiastic team members to serve as the Academic Coordinator for the classic Upward Bound program and the Academic Coordinator for the Math/Science Upward Bound program. Upward Bound is funded by the United States Department of Education and seeks to increase the college-going rate of qualified and selected low-income secondary school students. Upward Bound is an intensive year-long academic readiness program that provides tutoring and academic support throughout the academic year and a 6-week educational enrichment residential program during the summer. These are twelve-month, full-time positions, with an anticipated start date of November 16, 2009.
Duties:
- Develop, coordinate, and implement academic training and programs that enhance preparation for post-secondary education during the academic year and summer for students in the program
- Develop, implement, and provide oversight for academic year and summer academic enrichment activities on and off Appalachian's campus for high school students and families in the Upward Bound program
- Monitor students' academic performance regularly, and make recommendations regarding additional services needed based upon these reports
- Recruit, hire, train, and supervise students' tutors and summer leaders
- Serve as a mentor and positive role model to Upward Bound students
- Assist in data collection and database maintenance for Annual Performance Report
- Collaborate and coordinate services with other pre-college programs on the Appalachian campus
- Serve on approved (by the UB director) educational advisory boards
- Assist with writing grants for continued funding of services
- Other duties as assigned by the Director.
Required Qualifications:
Master's degree in a counseling, education, or a related field OR Bachelor's degree and at least three years teaching or counseling adolescents. The successful candidate is flexible, adaptable, committed, and energetic. Strong public relations skills, demonstrated proficiency in written and oral communication, computer competency and outstanding organizational skills are a must. The ability to establish rapport with adults and adolescents and serve as a positive role model is essential. Ability to administer program services that require evening, overnight and/or weekend hours, and travel to the target counties. Applications from persons with personal experience in overcoming academic or economic obstacles to success are encouraged.
Preferred Qualifications:
Degree in Math/Science preferred for the Academic Coordinator of the Math/Science Center. Experience working with and in public schools is important. Knowledge of post-secondary education requirements and financial aid is desirable.
