Position Description
The Center for Academic Engagement at the University of South Dakota is seeking a Global Learning Advisor. The Center administers campus-wide study abroad and exchange programs, as well as, National Student Exchange. USD seeks to increase participation dramatically over the next few years. The Center for Academic Engagement also supports service-learning, undergraduate research and creative activity, civic engagement, and nationally competitive scholarships.

Duties
Under the auspices of the Center, the Global Learning Advisor provides services to students who apply for, participate in, and return from study away programs. This position will work closely with students, faculty, staff, and abroad partners to ensure excellent advising, planning, and program implementation. This is a full-time, 12 month position that is benefits eligible. The position is partially funded by a federal grant.

Required Qualifications
The position requires a bachelor's degree; master's is preferred. The following are important characteristics of a successful candidate:

1. Ability to professionally advise students and other campus affiliates regarding study away opportunities. This includes knowledge of USD academic programs, student development, domestic/international travel issues, and other experiential learning opportunities.

2. Excellent written, verbal, personal communication, and organizational skills to work closely with staff, faculty, students, and international partners in a variety of settings.

3. Knowledge of domestic and international travel regulations of various governmental entities; Board of Regents and University policies; and all University exchange agreements, affiliation documents, and the other international travel contracts.

4. Ability to do basic math related to managing a budget and making budget projections.

5. Ability to act independently and take initiative to problem-solve.

Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree.

Position Description
The University Honors Program (UHP) seeks a highly motivated, talented, and experienced Academic Advisor to work with new and continuing students across a range of academic disciplines with focus on the biological sciences, pre-health and liberal arts majors.

Duties
- Advise Honors students, across a broad range of majors with emphasis on advising students in biological sciences, pre-health and liberal arts majors from freshman orientation through graduation with Latin Honor
- Lead Honors orientation sessions and work closely with incoming students during UHP orientation and initial registration during orientation. Conduct "introduction to honors" orientations during the school year for post-freshman and transfer admits to UHP
- Meet individually with advisees throughout the year, including freshman and sophomore pre-registration advising in fall and spring terms and at least annually with juniors and seniors
- Advise students about their academic progress and plans including UHP requirements, academic degree requirements, and registration procedures
- Maintain PeopleSoft comments documenting communications with students
- Write letters of recommendation for students
- Guide students to appropriate resources for undergraduate research, study abroad, civic engagement and academic success to help them reach their full potential
- Encourage qualified students to apply for appropriate departmental, college, national and international scholarship competitions
- Support students in their adjustment to academic/university life and make appropriate referrals for specialized assistance or counseling services as needed

Required Qualifications
- Master's degree.
- Significant experience of at least two years advising and/or teaching in a higher education setting, to include significant responsibility developing, planning, and implementing support and advising activities.
- Interest in working with students across a range of disciplines with emphasis advising biological sciences, pre-health and liberal arts majors.

Duties
Duties/Responsibilities (1) Coordinator of CLA Individualized Degree Programs (IDP):

Serve as advisor to Individually Designed Interdepartmental Major (IDIM) and Bachelor of Individualized Studies (BIS) students (help students to develop, gain approval for, and carry out major programs and senior projects, make referrals to faculty advisors and other advising offices, maintain student records, solve problems).

Supervise and coordinate activities of one academic advisor and oversee support services provided by other staff.

Coordinate all phases of IDIM and BIS program approval and major clearance processes.

Coordinate maintenance of program records for IDIM/BIS students.

Coordinate preparation of all IDIM/BIS informational materials (brochures, website, batch e-mails, meeting handouts, catalog copy, etc.).

Duties
45% Pre-Health Student Advising

Advise CBS students pursuing a range of health careers, including medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, physician assistant, and other health related programs.
Counsel CBS students as they navigate pre-professional requirements, select a major, and pursue experiences relevant to their career goals
Assist pre-health CBS students with navigating the application process to medical school, dental school, and other health related programs
Provide advising support to CBS pre-health students through drop-in advising sessions, phone, email, and appointments
Advise students regarding the timing and readiness of their pre-health application, and how to navigate the application processes, including appropriate referrals to on-campus resources for writing personal statements and interview skills
Understand range of career options available to health program graduates to help students choose a path that matches their interests and skills
Be knowledgeable of career opportunities in health care and keep abreast of trends and changes in health care delivery
Support students in handling uncertainty and disappointment, and redefining goals

40% Program Development & Management

Design and implement student development activities based on assessment data and best practices, with a particular emphasis on programming for pre-health CBS students.

Position Description
CBS Student Services empowers students to identify, develop, and achieve their academic, career and personal goals so they graduate in a timely manner and are engaged citizens after college. Through helping students to identify meaningful goals that reflect their interests and strengths and create academic and co-curricular plans, CBS Student Services staff members are educators who teach students to recognize and connect learning opportunities, both inside and outside the classroom, to their broader goals.

Academic Advisors participate in three areas of responsibility, including academic advising and student advocacy, program development and management, and professional development and service. By helping students to identify their strengths, interests, and pertinent resources, information, and learning opportunities, CBS advisors assist students in building skills to make commitments that inform and guide their educational plans. Advisors work with students throughout their collegiate careers (from admission to graduation) to help them successfully achieve their goals.

Duties
70%. Academic Advising & Student Advocacy
Implement the CBS advising philosophy to foster student learning and development by helping students to build skills and make commitments that inform and guide their educational plans, and facilitate timely graduation and progress toward career goals.
-Guide students through the process of identifying strengths and interests, formulating personalized educational plans, and developing strategies for academic success
-Assist students in building skills to facilitate achievement of the CBS and University of Minnesota student learning and development outcomes
-Develop and initiate techniques to enhance advising efforts and engage in proactive outreach and communications to students
-Advise students concerning course requirements and course availability, and help students identify educational learning opportunities and resources
-Monitor student progress towards degree requirements in order to intervene, advise and recommend solutions to facilitate students' progress and success
-Provide advising to students through one-on-one appointments, drop-in advising, group advising, telephone and email communication
-Work with students to provide support related to the adjustment to academic/university life and make appropriate university and community referrals based on individual student needs
-Facilitate appropriate intervention and advocacy
-Interpret and implement University policies and procedures
-Utilize databases (e.g., APAS, PeopleSoft) to complete advising responsibilities
-Contribute to the development of tools to effectively support and evaluate student learning and record management

20%. Program Development & Management
Design and implement student development activities based on assessment data and best practices.
-Serve as lead advisor for select student services initiatives and programs, such as orientation, study abroad, workshops, and other special events, by identifying needs, outcomes, and resources, and evaluating effectiveness
-Work closely with faculty and campus staff to develop programs and plans to effectively deliver advising and support services to students
-Participate in Student Services efforts to improve retention rates, four-year graduation rates, and student satisfaction
-Track and summarize data to analyze trends and make recommendations for improvement of office practices

10%. Professional Development & Service
Engage in professional development and service activities related to the advising and student services profession, within the University of Minnesota community and beyond.
-Contribute to the strategic planning process for the Office of Student Services and ongoing evaluation for improvement of services
-Serve as a liaison to an academic department
-Actively contribute to the improvement of written and electronic advising information and materials
?Continue professional development and scholarly activity in the field of academic advising to maintain knowledge of trends and best practices (e.g., membership in professional associations, attendance at conferences and seminars, write and publish articles, serve on teams and collaborate with other professional groups, etc.)
-Serve on Student Services, College and University-wide committees as requested

Required Qualifications
Master's degree in higher education and student affairs, college student personnel psychology, counseling, social work, or field related to advising. Significant experience (of one to seven years*) in an educational setting performing academic advising and developing, planning, and implementing support activities for a diverse student body. Commitment to fostering student learning and applying student development to work with students. Evidence of effective oral and written communication skills, team-building, and interpersonal skills. Compassion and enthusiasm for the undergraduate experience. Exceptional work-ethic. Ability to take initiative and work independently as well as collaboratively. Strong computer experience with word processing and database management. Commitment to equal opportunity and diversity and is able to appreciate and support diverse student backgrounds and experiences. Ability to initiate projects and programs and see them through to completion. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and prioritize conflicting demands. Position Description
Under the guidance of the Director of Student Success, implement academic advising services for students in the College for Professional & Adult Learning (CPAL) and Social Science Division. Tuesday and Thursday evenings and some weekends required.

Duties
1. Advise Social Science Division students
2. Advise CPAL Social Science Division students
3. Register new transfer students
4. Serve as academic contact person and initial advisor until permanent advisor is assigned
5. Assist in the process of assigning new transfer students to full-time advisors
6. Assist students as needed when they are unable to meet with assigned advisor, particularly when faculty are not on campus
7. Assist students with change of advisors and majors
8. Assist with the planning and implementation of faculty development related to advising
9. Participate in the Council of Success including contacting and working with students regarding academic difficulties and contacting unregistered students
10. Assist with student success efforts as needed
11. Participate in continuing professional development
12. Keep student academic records/files current including Plan of Study forms, Graduation Petitions, etc
13. Work closely with appropriate University offices (i.e. Registrar, Business Office, Academic Advising, Admissions) to assist students
14. Maintain regular office hours, including some evening hours, to meet with students

Required Qualifications
1. Familiarity with advising techniques and retention and success strategies required
2. Bachelor's degree required, Master's degree preferred
3. Must handle diverse work problems on a daily basis and be able to multi-task
