Meet
the Faculty
Dr.
George Steele
-is the
Director for Educational Access, at The Ohio Learning Network (OLN),
an initiative of the Ohio Board of Regents. OLN is a consortium
of two- and four-year public and independent colleges and universities
in Ohio united and working together to improve learning through
use of technology, to share technology costs where appropriate,
and to promote their distance learning content.
George
coordinates and manages student service issues for OLN. He is the
team leader for OhioLearns! An online catalog of courses,
certificates, and degrees offered at a distance. He also manages
catalog data reporting, coordinates OLN’s Regional Coordinators
leader for the Customer Management Relationship system, and
oversees several statewide collaborative projects and the student
service initiatives.
George has been a member of the National
Academic Advising Association (NACADA) for over 20 years. He has held
a variety of offices with NACADA and has authored and co-authored
a number of articles and monograph and book chapters addressing topics
such as advising undecided and major-changing student, issues related
to academic and career advising, and use of technology for learning.
Eric
Stoller - is an Academic Advisor & Web
Coordinator for the College of Health and Human Sciences at Oregon
State University. He served previously as a Marketing Specialist
for Student Affairs at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Eric
has over 10 years of web site creation experience. His technology
competencies include accessibility/usability analysis, search engine
optimization, web 2.0 implementation including blogging best practices,
and web site statistics.
Eric is a student affairs techie who can translate technology jargon
into meaningful Student Affairs action and policy. As an academic
advisor, Eric is literally "plugged in" to how today's
student interacts with various web technologies.
Eric has given presentations on web-related technologies at multiple
Student Affairs conferences (AACRAO, NACADA, and NASPA) and is a
former regional chair of the NASPA Technology Knowledge Community.
He holds a BA in Communications/Public Relations from the University
of Northern Iowa and an Ed.M. in College Student Services Administration
from Oregon State University.
Karen
Thurmond - is
Director of Campus Advising at The University of Memphis, where
she has been for 18 years. Her responsibilities include advocacy
across campus for academic advising initiatives and for academic
advisors serving in a faculty, peer, or professional role. Ms. Thurmond
coordinates the degree audit computer system at The University of
Memphis, and serves a member of the Center for Academic Transition
staff, where transfer students are advised in their first semester
at The University of Memphis of Memphis . Ms. Thurmond currently
serves on the First Year Experience task force at U of M. Ms. Thurmond
has written for the NACADA monograph Advising Transfer Student
on four year to four year transfer, and for the NACADA New
Advisor Guidebook on the environment of higher education.
She chairs the NACADA Webinar Advisory Board, and serves a member
of NACADA Emerging Leaders Development Team. She served as NACADA
Region 3 (TN, KY, WV, NC, SC) Chair 2005-2007. She has completed
coursework for the Ed D in Higher Education at The University of
Memphis. She will soon complete her dissertation on advisor purpose.
Laura
Pasquini- is
a self-declared geek and a self-taught techie who is interested
in bringing online collaborative tools into the realm of instruction
and advising. Laura joined the Students Obtaining Academic Readiness
(SOAR) office at UTA during the Fall 2008 semester to help coordinate
the supplemental instruction and tutoring program. She has been
a member of NACADA for the past five years, and has also served
as an academic advisor at the University of Toronto and Miami University.
She has an M.S. in Education from Niagara University and a certificate
in E-Learning from the University of Toronto. Her research interests
relate to curriculum and program development to encourage collaborative
learning with web 2.0 tools and electronic resources. Laura has
developed engaging online experiences with the use of a variety
of technologies, such as, podcasts, online social networks, collaborative
photo albums, social bookmarks, blogs, and wikis. She initiated
a pilot project to transition new university students with an online
peer buddy to connect with first year students through Facebook,
Blogger, and Flickr. Along with the initiatives developed above,
Laura has experience with effective web writing, online marketing
and visual design; she plans to pursue further education in the
area of applied technology & learning.
