Wow! We had a great time
in Portsmouth - 144
participants from all NACADA Regions took
advantage of the quality program offered at the Institute.
Kenneth Kirk
(Davidson County Community
College) stated: "My
experience at the NACADA Portsmouth Summer Institute was truly
outstanding. I walked
away more confident and knowledgeable about
setting up an effective advisement center."
So, if you missed the excitment in Portsmouth, plan to join
us in Madison, July 30 - Aug
1. There's still time to take advantage of
the early discount fee.
You and your colleagues will benefit from this professional
development opportunity!
Who
should attend? The Institute is designed
for individuals or teams who have responsibility for academic
advising, including academic advising campus task force
members, advising program directors, advisors, campus administrators,
teams or individuals desiring to refine or redesign campus
advising services.
The
Institute utilizes an effective integration of
expert group presentations with small group discussions,
workshops and topical sessions led by skilled practitioners
and organized by institutional type. Through these activities,
you will develop a network of supportive colleagues throughout
the United States and Canada.
A
very valuable part of the Academic Advising Summer Institutes
is the opportunity to prepare an ACTION PLAN
for solving an advising challenge on your campus. The scope
of the action plan is left up to you. The scope may be as
narrow as devising a new form or as broad as proposing a
new model for delivery of advising on your campus or recommending
the use of new technology. You will receive assistance with
this project by attending relevant sessions, group discussions,
and group and individual consultations with institute facilitators
who have expertise in the area you have chosen. You may
come with an issue in mind or discover one through the information
you hear from the experienced faculty. In addition to the
excellent general sessions and a wide variety of workshops
and topical sessions, your own ACTION PLAN will be refined
and prepared in your daily group discussion sessions.
Here
are just a few of the issues addressed in the individual
or team ACTION
PLANS at the 2005 Summer Institutes. The participants
in the PORTSMOUTH Summer Institute are just returning home
with Action Plans of their own - watch the website for these!

Attention
Conference presenters: On
June 8, all presenters and co-presenters were emailed the

that email, contact nacada@ksu.edu immediately.
The
NACADA National Conference Registration Brochure
was mailed June 30 to everyone who received these Highlights.
Allow up to three weeks for delivery-in the meantime, the

Featured this month in the Clearinghouse...
|
 |
Assessment, evaluation and accreditation are buzz words
on most campuses. In this month's featured article,
"Using
CAS Standards for Self-Assessment and Improvement,"
NACADA past President Eric
White shares how the CAS Standards and Guidelines
for Academic Advising can help meet your assessment challenges.
As
intial student enrollment moves into the dog days of summer
advisors routinely see more students who are academically
underprepared for college. This month
the Cleairnghouse features ideas that have proven
successful in advising and retaining these at-risk students.

Coming
in Spring 2007!
Foundations
of Academic Advising CD3 - "Understanding
Cultural Identity and Worldview Development"
In
a recent issue of Academic Advising Today, Cornelius
Gilbert, academic advisor at the University of Wisconsin,
stated, "As America's ethnic and racial demographics
continue to shift, not only on college campuses but throughout
the nation, it is essential that administrators and practitioners
prepare to effectively deliver cross-cultural services.
Professionals of all ethnic and racial backgrounds need
to gain multicultural awareness and multicultural competence"
(2005, Sept).
Blane
Harding, Academic Advisor at Colorado State University and
Academic Advising Today author, contends (2005,
June), "If we are to truly embrace diversity, we must
also become more internally aware. How can we better understand
other worldviews if we do not fully understand or question
our own? If we are to raise our awareness internally, we
must question our own attitudes, values, beliefs, behaviors,
assumptions, and prejudices. Only when we have done this,
can we truly value diversity."
In
response to these voices and many others, CD3 of the Foundations
of Academic Advising series will address informational material,
conceptual theories, and relational skills that relate to
the development of intracultural and intercultural competency.
Watch for this treasure-house of information on topics such
as the worldview continuum, ethnocentrism vs. ethnorelativism,
amalgamation theories, the myriad aspects of cultural identity,
and much more! |
