Advising Today is the quarterly electronic publication (e-zine) of NACADA: The Global Community for Academic Advising. It exists to provide a venue for academic advisors, faculty advisors, and advising administrators to share their experiences and discuss their ideas about the theory and practice of academic advising in higher education.
All content is selected to support the association's five strategic goals:
- Address the academic advising needs of higher education globally
- Advance the body of knowledge of academic advising
- Champion the educational role of academic advising to enhance student learning and development in a diverse world
- Educate university and college decision makers about the role of quality academic advising in higher education
- Ensure the effectiveness of the NACADA organization
GENERAL ARTICLES
NACADA welcomes member articles and opinion pieces that are directed to practicing advisors and advising administrators. Submissions are reviewed and selected by members of the Editorial Board, and articles are printed as space is available.
- General article authors should strive to represent a balanced perspective on their chosen topic. The ideal submission is educational in nature, positive in tone, and focused on particular aspects of academic advising.
- "Vantage Point" pieces are a type of general article which feature the unique story of one of the myriad of advisors who makes up our diverse association. Advisors come from a wide variety of backgrounds, advise diverse student populations, and work in vastly different settings. In short, every advisor has an individual vantage point!
- Articles are generally written in 3rd person (advisors should…) although 1st person (we should…) is occasionally warranted (most often in the case of "vantage point" pieces.). Submissions written in 2nd person (you should…) will not be accepted.
- Articles should be approximately 1000 words in length, not counting the title or reference citations.
- References to other resources such as books/articles/web sites that provide background must be appropriately cited using the guidelines of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 6th edition or the MLA Handbook for Writers, 7th edition. (Footnotes will not be accepted.) Improperly citing or failing to cite quotations and references is plagiarism and disqualifies a submission from publication.
- Commercial messages and promotions will not be accepted; submissions must be both product- and vendor-neutral.
- In submitting the article, the author agrees to the following stipulations:
- The author guarantees that the article is original and accurate and does not infringe on any copyright or proprietary right of others. In the event of such claim, action or proceeding instituted against the author as a result of an alleged violation of such right, NACADA will be held harmless.
- The author also grants and assigns to NACADA full and exclusive rights to publish the article. The author grants NACADA the right to print and reprint the article. NACADA, in turn, grants the article author ‘not for profit’ use of the article on the author’s home campus. The author agrees to obtain NACADA permission prior to using the article in other situations.
- Author photos are included with all articles. Authors will be asked to submit a “headshot” of themselves (or a group shot if that is preferred in the case of multiple authors) as an email attachment. The photo can be in either .jpg or .gif format, but it does need to be high enough resolution (at least 150 dpi) to be workable for print in the PDF version.
- Articles that were printed elsewhere cannot be reprinted in Academic Advising Today without written permission from the original printing source.
- At the completion of the editing process, and prior to publication, authors will be required to sign an Author
