Spring 2008 ArkAAN Conference

Purpose Driven Advising

Keynote Speaker:  Dr. Joseph Cuseo

The ArkAAN Executive Board is pleased to announce that Dr. Joseph Cuseo, Associate Professor in Psychology at Marymount College, will be the keynote speaker. Joe Cuseo holds a doctoral degree in Educational Psychology and Assessment from the University of Iowa. Currently, he is a Professor of Psychology at Marymount College (California) where for 25 years he has directed the first-year seminar, a course required of all new students. He has been a member of the Advisory Board for the National Resource Center for The First-Year Experience & Students in Transition, and has received the Center’s “Outstanding First-Year Advocate Award.” He is also a 13-time recipient of the “Faculty Member of the Year Award” on his home campus, a student driven award based on effective teaching and academic advising. He has authored numerous articles and chapters on the first-year experience, a textbook for first-year seminar, titled: Thriving in College and Beyond: Research-Based Strategies for Academic Success & Personal Development , and is currently completing a monograph on the first-year seminar, titled: The First-Year Seminar: Research -Based Guidelines for Course Design, Delivery, & Assessment .

Plenary Speaker:

Dr. Sally Roden

Dr. Sally Roden, Dean of Undergraduate Studies at the University of Central Arkansas, will lead the plenary session for the upcoming 2008 ArkAAN Conference. Dr. Roden is serving on the Arkansas Legislative Task Force on Higher Education, Remediation, and Graduation Rates. Dr. Roden’s presentation will highlight this most timely topic for all of Arkansas’ higher education institutions.

 

ArkAAN advising awards and scholarship opportunity:

  • ACADEMIC ADVISING AWARD - ArkAAN sponsors the Academic Advisor Award for both professional and faculty advisors. The selection committee will evaluate nominations on the evidence of qualities and practices that distinguish the nominee as an outstanding academic advisor, faculty advisor, or advising administrator. The nomination deadline is February 1, 2008. The recipient will be honored during the business meeting at the ArkAAN Conference on February 29.
  • SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY - Any current ArkAAN member who is completing graduate-level research which significantly adds to the body of knowledge on academic advising may be interested in this scholarship. Undergraduate students may be eligible when sponsored by a current ArkAAN members who is familiar with the individual research proposal. The deadline for the scholarship is February 1, 2008.
