Research Committee Minutes

October 6, 2005

Las Vegas , NV

Present: Joyce Buck, chair. Rich Robbins, Jeni Wyatt, Jane Pizzolato, Jill Johnson, Joshua Smith, Sharon Aiken-Wisniewski, Kathleen Shea Smith, Peter Hagen, Rhonda Mandel. Scribe: Marsha Miller

  1. Introductions and Goals. Joyce Buck, Committee chair asked members for introductions. She explained the goals of the Committee which are to further the association's research agenda. There was discussion regarding member requests for review of research methodology; the Chair will call upon current and former Committee members to assist as needed.
  2. Conference Tracks. There was discussion regarding research presentations made at the national conference. In keeping with the Boyer model, the Committee would like to encourage members presenting within the research track to conduct and make available literature reviews. There was a question regarding the lack of national conference presentations by longtime researchers who could encourage new researchers. It was suggested that to encourage new researchers, the research track could also include paper presentations with senior members providing feedback to new researchers. Rich Robbins informed the Committee that the Division approved the Research Committee to view the abstracts of national sessions listed in the 'research' track. The Committee would like to be able to sponsor five national sessions as is currently done by Commissions.
  3. Grant Cycle. The Committee voted to provide two grant due dates each year: November 1 of the prior year and April 15 of the grant year and to eliminate preliminary proposals. 2006 grant deadlines will be November 1, 2005 and April 15, 2006 . Complete grant applications will be read without IRB approval on file but no monies can be distributed until complete IRB approval is on file with the Executive Office.
  4. Subcommittees. Second year Committee members will serve with the Chair as the selection subcommittee for research grants. First year Committee members will serve with the Chair as the selection subcommittee for student research awards.
  5. Cooperation with the NACADA Journal. The Committee agreed to continue its strong ties with NACADA Journal Co-Editors Terry Kuhn and Gary Padak in cultivating the next generation of scholars. Kuhn and Padak used Boyer's definition of scholarship as the foundation for a preconference workshop on the topic that built upon the Research Committee's preconference workshop.
  6. Region workshops. Committee members signed up to present the research workshop at regional conferences.
  7. Committee membership. Jennifer Wyatt, Appalachian State University, joined the Committee representing Region 3.
