… I attended my first NACADA conference in San Antonio, and I thoroughly enjoyed the entire experience. From informative and eye-opening pre-conference workshops to fabulous presentation sessions, from morning breakfast poster sessions to afternoon regional networking opportunities, I found the conference and the opportunities therein to be helpful, informative, and very enlightening … I can’t wait until next year for both my region’s conference as well as the national conference. Thank you so much for all of the hard work and effort that was put into the conference. I may have had a NACADA membership before I attended, but the national conference has made me a fan and proponent of NACADA.

There is little more rewarding than presenting at a Annual NACADA conference. Not only do I benefit from the research and work of putting together the presentation, but I also enjoy the experience of passing that information along and learn tremendous amounts from the conference participants who attend my session. It's a great feeling to know that the work that you do is appreciated and the information that you present is valued and valuable. I highly recommend presenting to everyone that I meet - present alone, present on a panel, - just get out there and share your ideas!

Monday, October 4 at 5:30-7:00 p.m. in Coronado S/T. Prior to the conference all participants are invited to read “Is that paper really due today?": Differences in First-Generation and Traditional College Students' Understandings of Faculty Expectations by Peter Collier and David Morgan, Higher Education 55:425-446 (2008) (With kind permission from Springer Science+Business Media).
Join your colleagues at NACADA’s Common Reading to discuss research on how first-generation students experience higher education. The discussion will focus on issues presented by Peter Collier and David Morgan, Higher Education 55, 425-446.
Faculty and students have different expectations regarding their responsibilities. Students achieve academic success when they acquire greater mastery of their role as “college students” and meet faculty expectations in demonstrating learning of course content. First-generation students often enter college with less expertise in the student role than other students. As others expand their mastery of faculty expectations, “first-generation students may still be struggling simply to understand the university’s expectations ‘in general’” (p.430).
Through this discussion, participants will:
- Consider structures and perspectives that affect first-generation students.Discuss the role of academic advising in translating academic expectations to students.
- Explore ways to increase first-generation students’ skill in mastering the role of “college student.”

Rey Junco
Lock Haven University |
Rey Junco
Rey Junco is a social media scholar who investigates the impact of emerging technologies on college students. His investigations concentrate on how social media affect student psychosocial development, engagement, and success.
Best known for his innovative research on how students use technology, Rey conducted the first large, multi-institution survey of student technology use, which he wrote about in his book, Connecting to the Net.Generation: What Higher Education Professionals Need to Know about Today’s Students. Rey further explored students’ Internet usage in his second book, Using Emerging Technologies, in which he conducted a comprehensive analysis of social media’s role in student engagement, technology’s potential to improve retention, and blogs’ potential to improve students’ writing and marketing skills. He recently published results from the first experimental study of social media on academic outcomes and found that Twitter can be co-opted for academic purposes in order to increase student engagement and improve grades.
Rey earned his doctorate in education in counselor education and his master’s in clinical psychology from Penn State University. He holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from The University of Florida. Early in his academic career, Rey was trained as an advisor at Penn State’s Division of Undergraduate Studies where he worked for two summers in the First-year Testing, Consulting, and Advising Program (FTCAP). He is currently a faculty member in the Department of Academic Development and Counseling, Director of Disability Services, and advisor for students who have yet to declare a major. |
