2010 Assessment Institute Region 1 Scholarship Winner:

Ana Ketler, University of Massachusetts Boston

Last February, I attended the 2010 NACADA Institute on Assessment of Academic Advising. This experience modified the way in which I approach my advising work. I connect more closely my daily interaction with students and faculty to my institution's larger goals of student persistence and student retention. Assessment of advising is now something I take into account as I develop projects and formulate goals, not as an afterthought once the work has been completed.

A few months after attending the Assessment Institute, I took the position of Director of Major Advising in our College of Liberal Arts. Mine is a newly created department, expected to impact faculty advising and to improve retention. As the department and my role develop, the tools I learned at the Assessment Institute guide me in setting concrete, quantifiable goals with built-in assessment measures. I am grateful for the NACADA Region 1 scholarship because it enabled me to incorporate the fundamental layer of assessment to my work, both as an experienced advisor, and as a new administrator.

"The Institute instructors emphasized the importance of beginning assessment practices in small steps and increments, which can be built on later."

I am energized and confident in my abilities after this institute.  I am overwhelmingly happy that I choose to attend and plan to attend next year.  Thanks to everyone for a wonderful institute!

Lisa Chastain, University of Nevada, Las Vegas

This was an excellent institute.  The faculty was very strong.  As an administrator, I appreciated the opportunities to look at assessment from the ground up.

Phyllis Peres, American University

I was dreading this institute because I just didn't understand the 'a' word.  I now feel I can do this and will take it on a little at a time.  Thanks for your assistance and patience.

Anita D Wright, SUNY Cobleskill

I would like to thank the NACADA Faculty for all their experience and professionalism. I was very impressed with everything that was provided and would encourage anyone involved in Academic Advising to attend in the future.

Mary Swanson, Florida Gulf Coast University

What more can I say ... just an awesome experience.  Thank you, NACADA!

Dr. J. W. Hicks, Georgia Military College
