COMMISSION AND INTEREST GROUP GOALS
Individual Commission Goals and future activities

ADVISING ADMINISTRATION:

    1. Since there are several professional development opportunities now for Administrators, there are plans to integrate the curricula for Regional Pre-conference Workshops, Pre-conference Workshops at the National Conference, topics during the Summer Institute, and the Advising Administrators Institute and Administrators Seminar.
      • This goal links to the following NACADA mission- Provide comprehensive professional development opportunities to the academic advising community. Identify, develop, and deliver professional development activities and resources to meet the needs of the academic advising community - including institutions, central administrators, full-time advisors, faculty advisors, and peer advisors.
    2. We plan to continue to utilize the time provided during the Commission/Interest Group Fair and Roundtables (in whatever form they take) for recruiting new administrators to the Commission. There is considerable support for the Roundtables although there is some variation of opinions about the optimal model. We intend to emphasize networking, particularly connecting veteran with novice administrators. There is strong support for opportunities during regional and national conferences for administrators to have time for "casual" discussion.
      • This goal links to the following NACADA mission- Assess member needs and talents. Identify representatives of diverse groups and plan for ensuring their successful involvement in association activities.

Future Activities Planned:

    1. Following the specific goals for increasing effectiveness for networking, the practice of providing stickers to designate Administrators at the Commission/Interest Group Fair received popular support. It will be continued.
    2. The Steering Committee will encourage and select conference presentations to be designated for Commission Sponsorship.
    3. The Steering Committee will solicit nominations and select a Service to Commission Award winner.
    4. The Commission will continue to support actively the variety of Administrator-specific professional development functions by NACADA.

ADVISING ADULT LEARNERS:

  1. Increase communication among members through a monthly discussion question on the commission list serve to promote the improvement of advising services for adult learners by identifying issues critical to adult learners.
  2. Improve information available to commission members and adult learners through the development of a commission website committee to recommend enhancements to website information.
  3. Increase commission visibility at state and regional conferences by encouraging sessions dedicated to adult learners and ensuring commission representation for the purpose of increasing commission membership.
  4. Development of a survey for future distribution to identify the common needs of adult learners and to identify successful programs that serve adult learners, to establish a "best practices" guide for advisors.

Future Activities Planned:

  1. Monthly discussion questions posted to the list serve (the first question has generated 11 responses in the first day)
  2. Creation of a committee to improve website content
  3. Mass e-mail to all commission members to encourage involvement and promote volunteer opportunities

ADVISING BUSINESS MAJORS:

  1. Encourage and sponsor programming at the National and Regional conferences.
  2. Encourage sharing and sponsoring of materials useful to advising business students.
  3. Develop a network of advisors and business students to keep in touch and share information.
  4. Help advisors of business students stay abreast of changes in the academic environment as it relates to business students specifically (AICPA, AACSB, etc.).
  5. Encourage NACADA to develop relationships with business agencies such as AACSB.

    Future Activities Planned:

    1. Explore types of advising models in business.
    2. Career planning and placement issues for business students
    3. Quantify spreadsheet for advising ratios - possible survey for research NACADA groups.
    4. Book report for NACADA
    5. Presentations at Regional and National NACADA conferences

ADVISING EDUCATION MAJORS:

  1. Election of new commission chair
  2. Increase discussion via the list serve about advising education majors topics.
  3. Proposal for a pre-conference workshop to address issues related to advising education majors
  4. Increase membership and participation at national and regional conferences.
  5. Discussion about participation in recognition awards for Fall 2004
Future Activities Planned:
  1. Seek funding for special projects and activities (i.e., Drive Ins, recognition awards).

ADVISING GRADUATE AND PROFESSIONAL STUDENTS:

  1. To encourage and support the growth of our community of Graduate and Professional School advisers and encourage NACADA membership.
  2. To encourage presentation at National and Regional conferences.
  3. To develop, through discussion groups, presentations and increased communication as well as publication, a body of knowledge pertinent to Graduate and Professional Student advising.
  4. To share and develop skills, abilities and programs that will insure diversity among our students and colleagues.

Future Activities Planned:

    1. Define and encourage activities of steering committee to include goal definition and web site enhancement.
    2. Encourage presentations from all members at national and regional conferences.
    3. Publish article.
    4. Structure commission meeting more as a business meeting and provide separate forum for discussion of topics and issues.

ADVISING STUDENT ATHLETES:

  1. Find out what happened to the N4A list serve - if it no longer exists create a new one - use it for networking and problem-solving.
  2. Develop the Advising Student Athletes Commission website.
  3. Encourage more conference proposal submissions.
  4. Provide NCAA legislation updates at yearly commission meetings.

Future Activities Planned:

    1. Presentations at National and Regional NACADA conferences.

ADVISING STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES:

  1. Provide information and support for advisors working with students with disabilities.
  2. Encourage inclusion of disability-related information in conference presentations.
  3. Stimulate access-focused planning in all aspects of NACADA.

ADVISING TRANSFER STUDENTS:

  1. Advance the body of knowledge on advising transfer students.
  2. Identify key issues in the advising and retention of transfer students.
  3. Identify innovative and effective methods used in advising transfer students.
  4. Increase level of involvement of commission members.

Future Activities Planned:

  1. Encourage presentations at regional and national conference.
  2. "Seed" topics to encourage discussion on Commission list serve.
  3. Continue new "tradition" of ATS group dinner during national conference.
  4. Promote Transfer Advising monograph when it becomes available.

ADVISOR TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT:

  1. Recruit and involve members in commission sub-committees.
        a. National Conference workshop steering committee
        b. Commission fair planning committee
        c. Service to Commission committee
        d. Web page development and maintenance committee
  2. Assist in development of advisor training video and other NACADA publications.
  3. Increase visibility of training and development commission and opportunities for members to share best practices.

Future Activities Planned:

    1. Recruit members to participate in session selection for 2004 conference.
    2. Establish clear criteria for selection and commission sponsorship.
    3. Solicit volunteers for commission fair committee.
    4. Request funds for commission fair from NACADA.
    5. Recruit committee members to investigate Service to Commission nomination process, solicit possible nominees, and, if applicable, nominate member for award.
    6. Contact members who expressed an interest in maintaining commission web page.
    7. Review current content, submit new material and maintain site.
    8. Actively encourage idea sharing on commission list serve.

ASSESSMENT OF ADVISING:

Communication

  • Continue development of network of advisors interested in assessment through annual meetings and list serve.

Presentations

  • Actively solicit more members to submit proposals to NACADA national and regional conferences, as well as to outside of NACADA assessment related conferences.

Contributions

  • Actively solicit members to submit articles to the NACADA Journal and other advising/assessment related publications on various topics (e.g., value added advising, learning outcomes, assessing faculty advising)
  • Begin the process of developing various publications and reports on assessment of advising topics:
    • Draft an "Assessment of Academic Advising Primer" as an electronic resource tool to be posted on the ASAC website.
    • Draft an instrument to survey NACADA members and list serve participants on the status of assessment in their unit/on campus- "Status of Assessment of Academic Advising" survey.
  • Begin dialogue with NACADA Research Committee on the establishment of an assessment of advising grant.

ENGINEERING AND SCIENCE ADVISING:

  1. Increased/better communications - list serve and e-mails to commission membership
  2. Continued improvement on information on the website - including resources for membership.
  3. Continued encouragement for participation in conferences - maintain level of concurrent and discussion sessions.with special invitation to new presenters.

Future Activities Planned:

N/A - as above - We need to deliver on these, then consider more substantive projects.


ESL and INTERNATIONAL STUDENT ADVISING:

  1. Developing an active and current list serve and website.
  2. Presenting at Regional and National NACADA Conferences on ESL/International Student Advising issues
  3. Submitting Publications on:
    • SEVIS
    • TOEFL Scores
    • International Student Advisor Development

Future Activities Planned:

  1. Chair's participation at NAFSA and TESOL Conferences
  2. Greater participation in National Conference roundtables, commission meeting, and Commission/Interest Group fair
  3. Website development and active list serve

FACULTY ADVISORS:

Where We've Been-

  1. Region 5 Conferences in Indianapolis and Madison to gain feedback on issues, direction, etc.
  2. Region 2 Conference in Pittsburgh to present four-hour workshop on faculty advising
  3. Repeat of workshop at national conference in Dallas
  4. Although overall numbers are up for faculty joining NACADA, a decrease in numbers in the Faculty Advisor Commission occurred this year.
  5. Both the keynote address and the special session given by Dr. Richard Light were extremely well received.

Where We're Going-

  1. Further develop the workshop and present it at all regional conferences in 2004.
  2. Collaboration with Advisor Training and Development Commission
  3. Provide for train-the-trainers for workshop on specific campuses as needed.
  4. Continue to speak out against "faculty bashing" and all forms of disrespect of any professionals in advising.

Other Strategies-

  1. Encourage more faculty to make presentations at regional and national conferences.
  2. Nominate more faculty for advising awards.
  3. Arrange to make more presentations on advising at professional organizations typically attended by college faculty.

LESBIAN, GAY, BISEXUAL, TRANSGENDERED, AND ALLIES CONCERNS (LGBTA):

  1. Encourage regional presentations to be made at national conferences.
  2. Establishment of a more sound networking effort within the commission to assist our campuses with the procurement of domestic partnership benefits and sexual orientation anti-discrimination clauses.
  3. Promote the allies aspect of the commission and increase the strength of their support
  4. Development of training modules to be distributed within the commission
  5. Help LGBT folks that cannot attend conferences to get involved.

Future Activities Planned:

    1. Work with commission members to create a draft of the commission strategic plan.
    2. An all out effort to recruit presenters for regional/national conferences
    3. Other activities as detailed by "mini-goal" groups - details to come.

MULTICULTURAL CONCERNS:

  1. Continue to solicit additional participation and development of programs related to multicultural concerns on campus.

Future Activities Planned:

  1. We will have an article in a 2004 NACADA Newsletter.

SMALL COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES:

  1. Work diligently to generate more participation from small colleges at national and regional NACADA conferences.
  2. Continue to find creative ways to gather information and connect with others at small colleges-increased use of list serve, publicity at regional conferences.
  3. Find a replacement for Maura Reynolds whose term ends in 2004. Several candidates are possible and being courted.

    Future Activities Planned:

    1. We will have an article in the June 2004 NACADA Newsletter.

TECHNOLOGY IN ADVISING COMMISSION:

  1. Enhancing NACADA's visibility and credibility as an academic advising organization.
    • Clarify and solidify how presenters will be supported with technology at national conferences.
  2. Provide comprehensive professional development opportunities.
    • Replace the display board with a lighter version so that it may more easily travel to regional conferences. 
    • Have Technology Sessions at each regional conference.
  3. Advance the body of knowledge on the use of technology in advising.
    • Double the number of ATECH articles on Technology Commission web-site.'
    • Revise Electronic Publication Awards.
    • Develop at least one training event to be held as a pre-conference workshop at the next national conference.
     
Future Activities Planned (long range):
    1. Ensure effectiveness of NACADA organization through the creation of training opportunities for technology commission members. Develop Pre-conference Training Workshops at regional as well as national conferences. Investigate the possibility of web-casts, teleconferences related to technology in advising themes or specific software skills.
    2. Provide Professional Development Opportunities:
  • Get involved in the discussion pertaining to the updating of the NACADA video. — This video needs to address many new issues facing the field- or separate videos could be made for a complete series. Technology and assessment are two new critical areas, along with diversity, that could be incorporated into the video.
  • Increase the number of Commission members that could serve on NACADA projects. Many NACADA Technology Commission members are leaders in their own areas and could be helpful to the organization in a the following ways:
    • Development of a member career services web-site
    • Monitoring and tracking of a career services web-site and the overall national web-site
  • To encourage collaboration with other commissions, organizations and groups such as NASPA/ACCRAO/NASFA, which historically have had high need and use of technology applications and also with historically black colleges & universities and community colleges that may have a need for increased uses of technology in their advising processes.

TWO-YEAR COLLEGES COMMISSION:

  1. Encourage participation in the Commission.
  2. Improve list serve participation.
  3. Work on acknowledging people who contribute to the Commission.

Future Activities Planned:

  1. Give Outstanding Service to Commission Award.

UNDECIDED/EXPLORATORY STUDENTS (CUES):

  1. Promote membership in the commission (relates to 5-C "Encourage new membership" in NACADA's Strategic Plan).
  2. Share information about successful programs, strategies, and techniques.
  3. Recruit members to present at regional and national conferences.
  4. Recruit members to submit articles for publication in journal and newsletter.
  5. Continue development of the CUES web site.
  6. Facilitate member dialogue via the commission list serve (relates to 1-C "Encourage greater participation in list serves, etc." in NACADA's Strategic Plan).

Future Activities Planned:

  1. Increasing the use of the commission list serve and enhance the dialogue on the list serve by introducing "exploratory" questions and discussion topics at least monthly, and invite "guest speakers" to write articles for the list serve on a monthly basis.
  2. Update and utilize the CUES display board at the 2004 National Conference and make it available for regional conference.
  3. Continue to update the CUES web site with resources for advisors of undecided and exploratory students.

Individual Interest Group Goals and future activities

FIRST-GENERATION COLLEGE STUDENT ADVISING:

  1. Gather and share information concerning First Generation College Students.
  2. Have a representative from the Interest group at all Regional meetings (possibly host roundtable).
  3. Be advocates on campus for First Gens.
  4. Be advocates in community by sharing info with local schools and community groups.

Future Activities Planned:

  1. Since all Regions except Region 3 were represented, I have asked for someone in the interest group to go to Regional conferences and hold a roundtable discussion addressing issues facing First Generation College Students.
  2. We are also planning some research involving several colleges.

NATIVE AMERICAN AND TRIBAL COLLEGE:

  1. Provide information to members on each of these areas, primarily through the list serve.
  2. Encourage colleagues to submit proposals to their regional conferences.
  3. Encourage colleagues to publish in their areas of expertise/scholarship.

Future Activities Planned:

  1. Continue to meet at the national and, where possible, the regional level.

PRE-LAW ADVISING:

  1. Increase number of presentations given at regional conferences.
  2. Improve web site, increasing its usefulness as a resource for pre-law advisors.
  3. Create volunteer/leadership opportunities within the interest group; find members willing & able to fill them.
  4. Increase size of interest group.

Future Activities Planned:

  1. E-mail version of this report will be sent to all members; additional e-mail updates sporadically throughout the year to provide information and resources.
  2. Gather information on pre-law advising programs across the country - what models are out there? What works well? Perhaps develop a monograph on this sometime in the future.

PROBATION/DISMISSAL/REINSTATEMENT ISSUES:

  1. Poll IG members regarding interest in moving toward commission status.
  2. Encourage research and publication in PDR areas.
  3. Utilize regional representatives to track PDR issues and presentations in their regions.
  4. Increase member involvement in the list serve and IG activities.
  5. Collaborate to present a pre-conference session on PDR issues with several collaborating institutions.

Future Activities Planned:

  1. Possible survey regarding PDR programming and outcomes
  2. Pre-conference workshop on PDR issues
  3. Decision regarding whether to move toward commission status

THEORY AND PHILOSOPHY OF ADVISING:

  1. Encourage submission of conference programs.
  2. Maintain list serve discussion group.
  3. Create website.
  4. Encourage submission of articles to the Journal, the Newsletter, and the Mentor.
  5. Work toward a special issue of the Journal on the theory and philosophy of academic advising.
  6. Develop a bibliography of articles, books, and other resources on advising theory.
