2003 Post-Conference Unit Report

 

Commission/Interest Group:   Advising Graduate and Professional Students   

Chair:   Virginia Hueske

 

Summary of Annual Meeting at National Conference (agenda items, issues, discussion topics, announcements, etc.)

Our commission's meeting was attended by enthusiastic participants all eager to share with each other stories of our challenges, similarities, different situations and common needs and goals. We all described our various job situations, our concerns for our students and the challenges they face and our own professional challenges. We all agreed that we needed more time to continue our discussion.

Our students:
  • Funding
  • Admissions/recruitment/orientation
  • Advising issues
  • Degree completion and accreditation processes
  • Recruiting a diverse population

Ourselves:

  • Salaries
  • Number of students in our programs vs. resources available to us
  • Collaboration among faculty and professional advisers
  • Training for new adviser/coordinators
  • The Adviser Certificate Program

Unit Goals and Objectives for Next Year:

  1. To encourage and support the growth of our community of Graduate and Professional School advisers and encourage NACADA membership.
  2. To encourage presentation at National and Regional conferences.
  3. To develop, through discussion groups, presentations and increased communication as well as publication, a body of knowledge pertinent to Graduate and Professional Student advising.
  4. To share and develop skills, abilities and programs that will insure diversity among our students and colleagues.

Future Activities Planned:

  1. Define and encourage activities of steering committee to include goal definition and web site enhancement.
  2. Encourage presentations from all members at national and regional conferences.
  3. Publish article.
  4. Structure commission meeting more as a business meeting and provide separate forum for discussion of topics and issues.
