Summary
of Annual Meeting at National Conference (agenda items,
issues, discussion topics, announcements, etc.)
There
were approximately 40 people who attended the Advising Student Athletes
Commission meeting. We spent quite a bit of time with introductions
of attendees. NACADA updates were given as well as encouragement
to attend commission sponsored sessions. Commission members were
encouraged to submit proposals for the 2004 national conference
as well as regional conferences. All attending were encouraged to
attend the poster sessions. Repeating proposals between N4A and
NACADA was also discussed. The rest of the session was spent in
small groups networking and discussing issues faced while advising
student athletes.
Approximate
Number of Commission/Interest Group Members in Attendance:

Critical
Issues of Concern or "Hot Topics" Identified:
Advising
budgets were discussed - many members have to choose between attending
N4A and NACADA. New proposals regarding NCAA legislation will affect
how many advisers work with student athletes - potential ways of
working together and sharing information were discussed. Roles of
collegiate advisers and athletic advisers were shared as well as
ways to work more collaboratively. Under-prepared student-athletes
are of concern to most commission members.
