Commission & Interest Group Post-Conference Reports

NACADA Commission and Interest Group Division

2003 Post-Conference Unit Report

Commission/Interest Group:  Native American and Tribal College Interest Group

Chair:   Mark Bellcourt & Adrienne Thunder

Summary of Annual Meeting at National Conference (agenda items, issues, discussion topics, announcements, etc.)

This meeting served as the inaugural meeting of the NATCIG, and it was primarily the beginning of what we hope will be a continuing conversation of the needs and interests of the NACADA members interested in advising issues related to Native Americans and tribal colleges. We identified a number of areas we felt our interest group would like to work on in the coming year and beyond, and those items will be listed further on in this report. We also generated an e-mail list of those present to officially begin the group's list serve.

Approximate Number of Commission/Interest Group Members in Attendance:   12

Critical Issues of Concern or "Hot Topics" Identified:

  • Retention Strategies
  • Faculty Relationships
  • Transition Issues
  • Research
  • Liaison/Allied Organizational Relationships
  • Resources
  • Cooperative Programs (between tribal colleges and baccalaureate institutions)

Unit Goals and Objectives for Next Year:

  1. Provide information to members on each of these areas, primarily through the list serve.
  2. Encourage colleagues to submit proposals to their regional conferences.
  3. Encourage colleagues to publish in their areas of expertise/scholarship.

Future Activities Planned:

  1. Continue to meet at the national and, where possible, the regional level

Volunteer Opportunities Available Within the Unit:

    • Share information with membership
    • Plan for meetings
    • Workgroup for soliciting conference proposals
