Section 3: Issues/Items for consideration by the Division, Council or Board of Directors.

Issue/Item Details
Projector Fee at National Conference NACADA used not to charge a fee for presenters needing a projector at National Conferences. A $100.00 fee has been imposed during the last two National Conferences. The Technology in Advising Commission has serious concerns about this issue from both a historical and future perspective. We look forward to reviewing information from the National Office regarding technology costs for presentations and coming up with a better solution to this matter. Anita Carter is on the board as well as on our Steering Committee. George Steele is on the Finance Committee and our Steering Committee. Both will help bring our concerns and ideas forward.
Technology Volunteers at National Conferences We are looking to create a cadre of Technology Volunteers at National Conferences. We want to create a way to help presenters using technology to have a smooth set up and have someone available to trouble shoot or call for help in the event of set up problems so that presenters can concentrate on getting ready to present. Budget Request for 2004-2005: $400.00 for walkie-talkies for Technology Support Volunteers

Section 4: List Volunteer Opportunities Available in your Unit.

Volunteer Opportunity Details
Technology Volunteers at National Conferences New Idea for future National Conferences. Establish a group of folks who are willing to help with set up and trouble shooting for presenters using technology. To do this, we need to work with the National Conference Committee, the person in charge of volunteers, and the conference committee to understand the hotel IT support. We don't want to step on toes, but rather fill a niche that we think will be helpful to other NACADA members.
Accessiblity Consultants We hope to establish a group of Accessibility Consultants. Soliciting volunteers from both the Technology Commission and the Disabiltiy Students Commission who are knowledgible in this area we hope to create a small group of people who can advise others within NACADA on how to make technology accessible to all users.
Advising Technology Education Center (ATECH) Advising Technology Education Center. Solicit volunteers to help us identify articles on the web we can link to as well as ask folks to write for ATECH. Traditionally it has been hard to get people to write for ATECH, but we recognize that there is a wealth of articles already on the web for other publications. We hope that by getting volunteers to help us identify those articles (as well as encourage members to write for this area) we can increase the amount of helpful information that is there for NACADA members.
Regional Liasions People can volunteer to be a regional liasion for the commission. Such a person would help encourage Technnology presentations at regional conferences, be a voice for technology matters in the region, and stay in touch with the chair and steering committee regarding technology sessions presented at conferences, or any other particular needs or interests relative to that region.

Section 5: Summary of Annual Commission Meeting

Technology in Advising Commission - October 2004. We held two meetings in Cincinnati.

Steering Committee Meeting. Wednesday, October 6, 2004. Technology in Advising steering committee members, Chuck Haberle, Anita Carter, Wes Lipshultz, Andrea Irby, and George Steele met to discuss matters facing the Commission. Items discussed were:

  • Expanding the steering committee to include more members.
  • Redesigning the Electronic Publication Awards.
  • Revamping aspects of our website, most notably: Student Information Systems (SIS) and Advising Technology Education Center (ATECH).
  • The matter of charging for projectors at National Conferences
  • Expanding the number of volunteer opportunities for commission members, specifically: Technology volunteers at national conferences; accessibility consultants; joint presentations/articles with members of Disabilities Commission
  • Having one member of our group serve on the National Conference committee for several reasons: 1) Find reasonable solutions to technology (projection charge) matters. 2) Work with the volunteer coordinator and conference planning committee to establish Technology Volunteers.
  • Begin the discussion and design of an Innovations Fair to be held at National Conferences.

Annual Technology in Advising Commission Meeting

The Annual Technology in Advising Commission meeting was held at 2pm, October 8 (Friday afternoon). Attendance was light (18 attendees) given the timing of the commission meeting compared to years past, probably due to the time of the meeting. Still we had a good discussion. Andrea Irby provided a brief overview of the commission, distributed fliers about the commission and highlighted the commission's on-going projects. Andrea also introduced steering committee members in attendance (Chuck Haberle, Wes Lipshultz, Anita Carter, George Steele, and Mark Suazo)

Andrea Irby and Chuck Haberle, former Commission Chair and Service to Commission winner, presented this year's Service to Commission award to Mike Leonard (Penn State University). Mike is the recent past chair of the Commission as well as a founding member of the Commission and manager of its website. Mike has done many, many things for the Commission over the past decade. He served as commission chair from 2001-2003 and has served for many years on the steering committee. He is the Webmaster for the commissions comprehensive website since its initial development in 1997 and he has co-managed the Technology Commission list serve since 1996. Mike always has great presentations to share with people at NACADA conferences and has published chapters in NACADA's Technology related monographs. He currently serves as the Managing Editor of The Mentor: an online academic advising journal and has also been appointed to the Steering Committee for Commissions and Interests Groups. Mike was unable to attend this year's national conference. Wes Lipshultz (Penn State) accepted the award for him.

Other items discussed were volunteering opportunities within the commission. Members last year wanted more volunteer opportunities, and we are glad to provide them! We are looking for volunteers in the following areas:

  1. (New) We are looking to create a cadre of Technology Volunteers at National Conferences. We want to create a way to help presenters using technology to have a smooth set up and have someone available to trouble shoot or call for help in the event of set up problems so that presenters can concentrate on getting ready to present.
  2. (New) Along with the Commission for Students with Disabilities we want to develop Accessibility Consultants. Because of the importance of creating technology and websites for all student users we want to help those creating web pages, using technology to do so in an accessible manner. We need people from both commissions who are willing to advise other members from time to time when it comes to making technology available to users of all abilities.
  3. ATECH articles and seekers of articles. The Commission has long encouraged members to write short articles for its Advising Technology Education Center (ATECH) page on the web site (/www.psu.edu/ncta/atech.htm). We recognize, however, that it is often hard for members to find the time to write articles and we also recognize that there are many quality articles out there that would be good to link to from this site. We still want to encourage writers from our membership, but would also like to work with those who would be willing to find worthy articles of interest to Commission members.
  4. Getting active in the Commission in the NACADA regional groups. We are always looking for folks who want to be more active in their regions with respect to Technology. Activities include encouraging regional members to submit technology presentations at regional conferences, presenting at regional conferences and/or reporting back to the chair on exciting technology related presentations seen at Regional conferences.

We also discussed what sort of pre-conference sessions people would like to see in the future as a way to bring interactive, hands on-learning opportunities to members. We also made those in attendance aware of the different submission procedure for pre-conference proposals. We will also reiterate this on our list serve as we move closer to conference proposal time for next year. Members in attendance also discussed what was working on their campuses, what was not, in effort to help members network and learn from each other. This has always worked well at both regional and national conferences and this time was no exception. Newer members in attendance said they wanted to hear from those who had used different kinds of degree audit, chat, on line calendaring systems and more. They wanted to be able to compare various options to take back to their home institutions. Steve Wilkins (Eastern Kentucky Univ) did such a presentation on Adviser Appointment Management Software that many found helpful on the last day of the conference. He has also shared his information via the list serve. Any that would like to volunteer with the Commission should contact Andrea Irby, chair, at Andrea_Irby@ncsu.edu, or 919-513-0292.
