Board of Directors.

| Reaching out to discipline-specific/faculty
organizations |
As an organization, NACADA has talked
for several years about reaching out to faculty. A task force
was convened three years ago, out of which grew the Faculty
Advisor Commission and the faculty development workshops.
A survey, asking what services NACADA can offer to faculty,
was sent to members of NACADA who had identified themselves
as faculty members. The survey was done at the end of the
school year and thus generated minimal response. The responses
did confirm our belief that most faculty belong to organizations
and attend conferences that are discipline-specific. Is it
time for us to join forces in some way with these other organizations?
Many reports indicate that advising is done by faculty and
is part of teaching. What can we learn from these organizations
and their members about how advising is shaped by disciplinary
styles and evolving epistemologies? Would this information
help us offer better, more timely services to faculty. As
we try to reach out to those involved with faculty advising,
the Faculty Advisor Commission would like to see this issue
addressed by the Board. |

| Coordinator of Who's Who
in Faculty Advising project |
Looking for someone to coordinate
the Who's Who in Faculty Advising project. This person would
receive the nominations, make sure that the nominator has
submitted all pertinent information (photo, brief bio, advising
philosophy, best practices, etc.), and then forward the info
to NACADA for posting on the Who's Who web page. |
| Newsletter editor |
Newsletters are a great way to keep
members up-to-date on commission activities and to give them
a forum for sharing information that will be of interest to
other members. We are looking for a person who is willing
to collect articles and "publish" the newsletter three or
four times per year. |

5: Summary of Annual Commission Meeting
Faculty
Advisors Commission Meeting - Friday, Oct. 8
There were approximately
25 people in attendance.
We spent about
50 minutes doing introduction and sharing thoughts about
faculty advising on our campuses. We heard about concerns,
issues, and best practices. It was time well-spent in that
those with concerns and issues were able to get feedback
from other attendees, and we all learned from the best practices.
Tim and Kathy
shared their idea for a Who's Who in Faculty Advising and
invited all participants to attend the Hot Topics session
on Saturday morning to further discuss this idea. Responses
to this idea were positive, and we plan on going ahead with
this initiative. Kathy asked for volunteers for a Commission
Steering Committee. Rhonda Sprague, JoAnn Schrass, Donna
Edgar, Vicki McGillin, and Lee Kem agreed to work with Kathy
on this committee. Kathy also asked attendees to think about
submitting presentation proposals for state, regional, and
national conferences.
