Mission 1 : Address the academic advising needs of higher education.

Collect information about the environments in which academic advising operates. Through surveys, focus groups or other means, determine how academic advising best operates in higher education and determine if success is determined by particular variables - delivery model by institutional type, intrusiveness, processes for specific populations, etc.

Section 4: List Volunteer Opportunities Available in your Unit.

Volunteer Opportunity Details
Steering committee membership Members are encouraged to participate in any/all of the following steering committees currently working toward the 2005 national conference: 2005 conference proposal committee; service to commission award committee; CIG Fair committee. Additionally, members will be actively encouraged to participate in the "Helping Hand" resource project, posting their bios and areas of training and development expertise on the commission website and allowing other commission members to contact them for advice/consultation.

Section 5: Summary of Annual Commission Meeting

Our annual Advisor Training and Development Commission meeting was held October 7, 2004 at the National Conference in Cincinnati. 32 commission members were in attendance.

Cole Holmes, chair, welcomed the group and announced that 67 concurrent sessions, 4 poster sessions, and 16 pre-conference workshops had been assigned to the AT&D track. Cole announced the names of the sessions that had received commission sponsorship as well as the 11 commission members who were receiving individual advising awards from NACADA. Cole also encouraged members to attend the Hot Topics session on the last day of the conference, where Bob Hurt (Cal Poly-Pomona), Katu Markowitz (UC Berkeley), and Sarah Hones (Southern Oregon) would lead discussion in three different topical areas.

The members in attendance reviewed progress/completion of the 2003-2204 commission goals and established goals for the 2004-2005 year. The goals are:

  1. Nominate a member for a Service to Commission Award (Committee named).
  2. Establish committess to oversee conference proposal selection, CIG Fair.
  3. Recruit member to write an article for 2005 NACADA newsletter.
  4. Elect commission chair for 2005-2007
  5. Establish "Helping Hands" resource section on commission website, allowing members to post bios detailing areas of expertise and offer assistance to members with questions/concerns specific to area.
