Proposed Advisor Certification

Certification Task Force Presentation October 3, 2003

WHY ESTABLISH AN ADVISOR CERTIFICATION PROGRAM?

  • To help individual advisors establish and maintain credibility with the aid of established external standards
  • To give novice advisors clear goals to strive for
  • To give administrators external standards to refer to in hiring, evaluating, and promoting academic advisors
  • To give colleges and universities standards for various assessment and accreditation purposes
  • To influence graduate programs related to academic advising

Proposed National Academic Advisor Certification Standards (competencies)

  • Foundations Knowledge
    • Advising Philosophy
    • Theoretical Frameworks       
    • NACADA Core Values   
    • Knowledge of higher education issues including legal and ethical issues        
  • Knowledge of college student characteristics
    • General knowledge of college students
    • Specific knowledge of population(s) advised
  • Career advising knowledge and skills
    • Knowledge of academic major
    • Knowledge of occupational, workplace relationships
  • Communication and interpersonal skills
    • Demonstrate the ability to relate to individuals and groups of designated students through the use of basic communication, helping and problem-solving skills
  • Knowledge of application of advising at local institution
    • Institutional information
    • Referral Resources                  
    • Graduation requirements
