Advising Administrators' Tips

Subject: Orienting/Advising Freshmen - How do you manage the millennial students' parents/family involvement in advising without alienating the parents or intimidating the students? (July 2005)

If you would like to submit a tip on this subject, please e-mail it to Linda Chalmers at Linda.Chalmers@utsa.edu. Thanks.

  • We offer a parent orientation on scheduled enrollment dates. Our Dean of Student Services leads this activity which demonstrates administrative support and status to the occasion. He provides a power point presentation on important freshmen orientation information and an opportunity for parents to ask questions.  Our Director of Student Housing and the Director of Financial Aid also participate.  This occurs at the same time as enrollment so most students see there advisor without parents looming over the process. We do not deny parents the opportunity to participate in the advising meeting however we begin the session by telling parents about FERPA regulations, that the student will be considered an adult, and ask the student if it is O.K. with them for their parents to sit in on the session. This will not deter the over-involved parent but at least it plants a seed that it is time to step back and let their child take some responsibility.
