Advising Administrators' Tips

At the Advising Administration Commission meeting in October 2004, the members attending endorsed the suggestion that a portion of our former commission newsletter be brought back to life. That newsletter, originally authored by member and former chair, Susan Campbell, had a section on "best practices" of administrators. Seeing that we all have busy work and personal lives, we opted to just focus on "administrators' tips sheets" as posted below. Hopefully this will be a source of inspiration and networking as we grow these tips throughout the year. If you would like to contribute a tip, please contact Linda Chalmers, Advising Administration Commission Chair, by e-mail at Linda.Chalmers@utsa.edu or by fax, 210-458-4303. Thank you!

Advising Administrators' Tips

Subject:  "Hot topics" identified at the 2005 NACADA pre-conference Administrator's Seminar at the national conference in Las Vegas. (November 2005)

Subject: Orienting/Advising Freshmen - How do you manage the millennial students' parents/family involvement in advising without alienating the parents or intimidating the students? (July 2005)

Subject: Considering a retreat with your advising staff and not sure what to do? (July 2005)

Subject:  Group Advising — What is your opinion on individual academic advising sessions versus group academic advising?  If you use one of these more often than the other, please give reasons and examples when possible. (June-July 2005)

Subject: "Ethics" in advising — Can you teach someone "ethics"? What do you advise your staff when their personal ethics/values bump up against the "advising community ethics/values"? (May 2005)

Subject: "What do you or your advisors do to encourage students to take responsibility for their degree progress?" (March 2005)

Subject: "How do you reward your advisors/staff when you don't have money for merit increases?" (February 2005)

Subject: Promoting a climate of cooperation and motivation for your staff, especially with the onslaught of the new semester's registration/first week of classes (January 2005)

Subject: Avoiding burn-out in yourself and your staff (December 2004)

This subject was this commission's "Hot Topic" at the 2004 NACADA conference. The following tips were compiled from the panel discussion and interaction with the audience. By the way, did you know there are over 700,000 web search references related to this topic? We talk a lot about it; now what can we do?
