Advising Administration Commission News and Updates

NOTE: This message was e-mailed to commission members on November 23, 2005.

To: Advising Administration Commission Members
From: Linda Chalmers, Chair

Dear Commission Colleagues,

The conference in Las Vegas was fun and inspiring, and the sheer largeness of it accentuated the excellence and professionalism of the conference chairs and the NACADA Executive Office staff. My “hat” tips to them for a quality professional development event.

Below is a brief summary of our commission tasks for the remainder of my time as your chair.  The list of Steering Committee members has been updated on our commission leadership web page. My leadership report for 2005-06 will soon be updated as well on the commission web site for you to read more details. (The progress of the 2004-2005 tasks will be updated when reports are posted.)

  1. Embrace diversity by expanding the steering committee to at least one rep from each region. (Response was great to this at the meeting and we are now only lacking a rep from Region 9 --- any takers?)
  2. Formally survey the commission members for “hot topics” that could be discussed in a forum at conferences or through email, etc.
  3. Establish a way to keep membership appraised of any federal legislation that impacts directly or indirectly academic advising (for example, transfer credit).
  4. Establish a “best practices by administrators” column in the Academic Advising Today newsletters.

Be sure to visit the "Advising Administrators’ Tips" on our "Resources" web page at www.nacada.ksu.edu/Commissions/C05/C05-Resources-Tips.htm. The topics for these tips will be updated soon and you will be notified by e-mail. You may submit your tips to me at Linda.Chalmers@utsa.edu at anytime on any of the topics listed, and I will have them updated on this web site as we go along throughout the year.

I hope the next few weeks will bring you some time for rest, fun, joy, and hope that the coming new year will shine brighter than ever for you and yours.

Warm Regards,

Linda Chalmers
