  • Mentor, http://www.psu.edu/dus/mentor/ — an electronic publication about academic advising in higher education--archived as well as current issues available -- some authored by people at small colleges/universities
    • Check out The Power of Good Advice for Students by Richard Light (scheduled as a keynote speaker for October 2003 NACADA conference in Dallas) in the May 2001 archives. Article is reprinted from the Chronicle of Higher Education and is adapted from Light’s thought-provoking book Making the Most of College: Students Speak Their Minds
  • Center for Inquiry in the Liberal Arts — sends occasional email essays on the liberal arts, http://liberalarts.wabash.edu/cila/liberalartsonline. The May 3, 2004, reflection, "The Wrong Major" by Frederik Ohles, includes this thought-provoking aphorism attributed to Kimberly Maxian Franklin (director of career services at Illinois College), "Let your major be what you love most; let your work be what you do best." Earlier essays are archived at the site and include "Looking for Good Practices? Look First at Liberal Arts Colleges."

The Lumina Foundation recently alerted the Small Colleges list serve about their new report--"Refuse to Lose: Today's colleges and universities must work to foster student success." This report joins several other down-loadable publications available at this site. The Lumina Foundation has gathered information of interest to colleges of all sizes and gives special emphasis to student success at community colleges.
