Advising Student Athletes Commission Members
From:
Janice Robinson, Chair
Hello, Fellow
Commission Members:
I am excited about the possibilities
and challenges that face this commission not to mention the impact
that this group will have in advising initiatives within this population.
Let me first start by introducing myself - I am Janice
Robinson, Life Skills Coordinator & Academic
Counselor in Student Athlete Support Services at Auburn University,
Auburn, Alabama. For the past thirteen years, I have worked in the
area of advising student-athletes, serving as counselor for football,
women's basketball, gymnastics soccer and currently softball &
equestrian. Prior
to coming to Auburn, I was Title III Tutorial Coordinator in the
Provost Office at Tuskegee University, Tuskegee, AL. While at Tuskegee,
I became a member of NACADA in 1994, and have been an active member
serving in several capacities - a charter member for the Advising
Student Athletes Commission, a State Representative for Alabama,
coordinator for the first Statewide meeting for Alabama, Chair of
a Region IV conference, volunteer at the National Conference hosted
by Region IV, and serving as a facilitator for numerous NACADA national
and regional meetings. I am also a member of N4A (National Association
for Academic Advisors in Athletics).
Before the conference, there are several
areas for which I would like input, feedback or comments
from commission members:
- Feedback
on 2006-2007 NCAA Proposals — If you
will review the information posted at www.nacada.ksu.edu/Commissions/C12/resources.htm
on our commission web site, we can discuss at the commission meeting.
Please be ready with questions or comments.
- Issues
and/or concerns that can be put on the agenda
for Commission Meeting. Please e-mail these directly to me (robinja@auburn.edu)
and be sure to attend the Commission Meeting in Indy -
Friday, October 20, 4:30 - 5:30 p.m. in the Council Room at the
Westin Hotel. There will be new initiatives
between the NCAA and NACADA and the N4A and NACADA that will be
discussed at the commission meeting.
- Materials
to be displayed on the commission's table/display board
at the Commission & Interest Group Fair - such as
references, publications, website information, other pertinent
handouts. Bring these items with you to the conference.
- Volunteer
to serve on the Commission Steering
Committee.
This
is a lot of information in the first e-mail. However, I have a lot
to catch up on with this Commission and be ready for the National
Conference. Your assistance, suggestions, and input are greatly
needed and appreciated. Please reply via e-mail or call me at your
earliest convenience.
Again, I am excited about this opportunity and look forward to meeting
each of you at the national conference.
P.S. Please respond on or before October 12th with
suggestions/comments or any materials. Thank you.
