Faculty Advising Commission
Who's Who Among Faculty Advisors

George K. Halsell

Dr. George K. Halsell serves as Associate Professor of Music at the College of Southern Idaho and chairs the College's campus-wide Advising Committee. The Committee serves as a liaison between the faculty and administration on both advising and registration issues. One of the important initiatives that the Committee has been involved with under Dr. Halsell's leadership was the creation of the PASS (Positive Action for Student Success) program, which allows instructors to give an early warning to at-risk students early in the semester so that they are encouraged to discuss their difficulties with the instructor.

Other areas Dr. Halsell and the Committee have also been active in are

  1. encouraging students to be advised by either a faculty advisor or advising professional by making them more aware of the risks they take by waiving advising,
  2. recommending changes to the CSI online registration process so that it is easier for students to have the information they need in order to register online but at the same time prevent them from automatically enrolling in classes either for which they are not prepared for or that require instructor permission, and
  3. offering training in advising for new faculty members.

One of Dr. Halsell's primary goals as a community college faculty advisor is to encourage colleagues to look beyond their own institution when advising students who plan on continuing their education at a four-year school; i.e., advisors need to learn which lower-division courses particular four-year programs require so that students may be advised into the most appropriate similar or equivalent courses as part of their Associates degree program.
