Faculty Advising Commission Who's Who Among Faculty Advisors

My
Philosophy of Advising
My
philosophy of advising is encompassed by the phrase, "Hey, ya got
a minute?" As advisors, we are the link between the rigors of academic
exercises and the reality of what each student juggles and coordinates
in his or her life. Yes, we do assist students in exploring classes,
defining appropriate credit loads, and planning an academic schedule
that proceeds toward a definable destination. However, real advising
goes beyond all of that to reach each student as an individual,
to listen to his or her issues, to offer alternatives, and to simply
put-be there. Some people don't understand or appreciate the impact
that advising has in the big picture of education. Without advising,
we are a cold, uncaring environment that does not understand the
purpose why places like Fox Valley Technical College actually exist-to
help people actualize their potential.
Advising
students is the most rewarding part of my job.
