Conference Report
Orlando, Florida
October, 2000
Commission Meeting Minutes:
Friday, October 6, 2000, 11 a.m.
- Introduction of each person,
including their name and school (approximately 25 in attendance).
- Discussion of Goals and Objectives:
- Include Goal #2 to read ENCOURAGE
conversations amidst the NACADA membership about sexual orientation
and gender identification, and its relationships in issues in
advising, etc.
- Include Goal #2 to read ESTABLISH
a supportive environment where advisors can discuss and address
homophobia and heterophobia in their institution, etc.
- Discussed Commission Review
that will take place in April. Asked membership to help
contribute ideas and state accomplishments. A note will
be put out on the distribution lists to call for ideas, etc.
Casey Self will write up commission review with assistance from
Randy Jedele and regional representatives.
- Discussed concept of Regional
Representatives from our commission to each region.

- Discussed Service to Commission
Award, and the fact that we are budgeted to present this award
for 2001. Criteria will be established by commission chair
and regional representatives.
- List serve Discussions - decided
to set the "response" on the commission list serve to go back
to EVERYONE on the list serve and not just the message initiator.
We will evaluate this again next year to see if it is working
OK.
- Commission Web Site - Brainstormed
ideas to include in the commission web site to be developed before
next October. Ideas included:
*Powerpoints/handouts from conference
presentations
*Meeting minutes
*Commission Newsletter distribution
*Links to campus programs/groups
*Coming Out issues
*Photos of group activities
*Glossary of common term
- NACADA Journal Articles - Randy
discussed the benefits of our commission members writing articles
for the NACADA Journal. Randy volunteered to help anyone
who is thinking about doing this, or even co-authoring an article
with someone.
- Announcements were made regarding
commission fair immediately following this meeting, the social
this evening in the lounge, and possible future openings for officer
positions within the commission.

A newsletter was created to highlight the
Orlando Conference activities involving the commission. This
newsletter was made available right next to the ribbons at check
in. On the back of this newsletter was an "ad" celebrating
National Coming Out Day which takes place on October 11th.
Several NACADA members participated by listing their names on the
flyer supporting NACADA's commitment to serving our LGBT students
and staff members.
