Commission Meeting Brainstorming Activity
The following projects/issues are the result
of our brainstorming activity during the commission meeting.
Participants voted for their top four projects/issues to determine
which ones we will focus on in the next two/three years. Here
is a list of the items that we now need to have individuals volunteer
to help make these happen:
-
Keynote speaker at national conference
that directly relates to LGBT advising issues (17 votes)
-
Develop a NACADA training video
on GLBT issues (or possibly work with other commissions and
organizations like ACPA/NASPA,to make this a video dealing with
Diversity issues training in general (14 votes)
-
One day Preconference meetings/sessions
on Multiple GLBT Issues (10 votes)
-
Major push for Articles in NACADA
Special Populations Issue, take list of volunteers today (9
votes) (3 volunteers came forward, and others not attending
have expressed interest too)
-
Provide more in-depth conference
sessions - Part 2 of GLBT 101 (8 votes)
-
Survey general NACADA membership
as to what their needs are regarding LGBT student advising,
state of LGBT services on individual campuses/training provided/campus
environment (7 votes) (this might be tied in with an overall
survey addressing diversity issues in general)
If you are willing to help us with
any of the goals above, please let Casey
know. Thanks very much to those of you in attendance
who helped come up with this list.
Commission Social
Thanks to the many of you (approximately
40-50) who stopped by our commission hosted social on Friday night
in the lounge at the Westin.
LGBTA Presentations
Congratulations to all the presenters of
the seven sessions addressing LGBTA issues in Ottawa. I know
that many of us felt positive about the attendance and feel like
we are making some headway! Presenters, please send Casey
your handouts via e-mail to have then posted on the commission web
site.

1) Service to Commission Award criteria
Each commission now has the authority to
establish criteria for a "Service to Commission" Award. The
proposal details can be viewed at www.nacada.ksu.edu/Associnfo/commawards.html.
I have drafted a set of criteria (see attached) that we can use
as a starting point to create our commission specific criteria.
Please let me know if you have any suggestions to add/delete.
I will forward our criteria to the Vice President for Commissions
after the Ottawa conference so that we can nominate individuals
for this award in the next round of NACADA Award Nominations (Spring,
2002). The next step is to get these criteria approved
by the VP for Commissions.
2) NACADA Journal and Academic
Advising News critical issue articles
Please let Casey know if you are interested
in writing articles for future editions of NACADA Journals or Academic
Advising News editions. This is an excellent way to educate
others about working with LGBT students on our campuses and fulfilling
our role as a commission in NACADA.
Deadlines will be in March for articles to be submitted to the national
office. Thanks for the three individuals who agreed to write
articles, as well as one who has already submitted.
3) Election for new commission chairperson
to occur in February, 2002.
Casey's term as commission chair ends at
the conclusion of the NACADA 2002 conference in Salt Lake City.
Elections for a new commission chairperson will take place in February,
2002. Please consider getting involved in NACADA at the national
level, and running for this position (or other open leadership opportunities).
Attached is the nomination form with details. (Contact Casey
for any specific questions you may have about the commission chairperson
position)
4) NACADA Budget Changes
Several changes have been made regarding
appropriate requests for commission budget requests:
-
Mailing costs for newsletters
will be eliminated since NACADA has established electronic options
for all correspondence.
-
Expenses for commission awards
will now be handled through the NACADA Executive Office
-
Social events for individuals
commissions will need to be funded by attendees at these events,
not by NACADA funding.
-
Give away items will no longer
be considered in budget requests.
If you have any questions regarding
these changes, or budget items you believe we should request please
contact Casey
