Advising Transfer Students Commission News and Updates
Note: The following message was e-mailed to commission members on

TO: Advising Transfer Students Commission Members
FROM: Troy Holaday, Commission Chair
Greetings
to all of you - members of the Advising Transfer Students Commission
of the National Academic Advising Association - from the new Chair.
If you missed this year's national conference, you missed out on
some exciting discussions and information sharing regarding how
to better serve students who transfer. A summary of this year's
Commission meeting and of some of the transfer workshops can be
reviewed on our commission web site at www.nacada.ksu.edu/Commissions/C19/C19-News-Cincinnati2004.htm.
Note
that there are many opportunities for participation in the Commission,
whether you made it to this year's conference or not.
Finally,
my own workshop, which detailed federal legislation proposed this
year that could dramatically affect (limit/restrict) the way colleges
evaluate transfer credits and report them to the government, shocked
many of the conference attendees who were previously unaware that
such legislation was underway. Our sources tell us that this legislation
is very likely to be passed, perhaps even in its current form, following
the election. If you are interested in learning more, the packet
of materials may be found at
www.bsu.edu/web/00taholaday/NACADA/LDtL.pdf.
If
you would like to join the commission list serve -- an on-line community
for advisors of transfer students -- simple instructions for subscribing
and posting messages are given at the web site below. We have a
slate of topics to discuss this year, so there WILL be some activity.
Also, any new information I get regarding the federal legislation
will be posted to the list serve immediately.

Thank
you for your attention, and I look forward to hearing from you soon
or seeing you at next year's NACADA national in Las Vegas. (I'm
already groaning thinking about the cheesy presentation titles that
will inspire!)
