Distance Education Advising Commission News and Updates

Note: The following message was e-mailed to interest group members on June 23, 2006.

To: Distance Education Advising Interest Group Members
From: Bobbi Thomas, Chair

Are you planning to join us in Indianapolis at the national NACADA conference in October 2006? The Distance Education Advising Interest Group will be sponsoring two opportunities for our members to get together and discuss up-to-the minute best practices on the following topics:

Interest Group MeetingOrientation Programs for Transfer Students at a Distance
Thursday, October 19, 10:00 am

Most colleges and universities host elaborate orientation programs for incoming freshman students. Transfer students, particularly those learning at a distance, usually are not provided with this benefit. The goal of this interest group meeting is to look at innovative orientation programs for distance students.

  • What are the most vital components of these programs?
  • Do students receive academic credit for participating in the orientation?
  • Have these programs proven beneficial to increasing student resilience?
  • Can the orientation programs for students at a distance be used to benefit transfer students on campus as well?
NOTEThis is your chance to share your best practices!  Interest group members whose institutions provide this service to distance transfer students are encouraged to discuss their orientation programs and bring (print) information to share with the group. Please contact Bobbi Thomas at (800) 222-4978 or thomasb@wsu.edu if you wish to actively participate in the group.

Hot Topic: "High Touch: The Human Side of Distance Advising"
Saturday, October 21, 10:30 am

The feeling of isolation that distance learners often experience comes as no surprise to their advisors. Advising satisfaction surveys completed by this population indicates they need "more" from their advisors than do their on-campus counterparts. This HOT TOPICS session will focus on high-touch tools advising teams can use to enhance student connectedness with the institution, thereby increasing student resilience and graduation rates.

The session will consist of a panel presentation by the following interest group members followed by a general discussion period:
  • Sharon Nellis, Assistant Dean, Undergraduate Programs, Collaborative Nursing Program Director, University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Nursing
  • Susan McCoy, Academic Advisor, Governors State University, Board of Governors Program
  • Ann Sukalac, Adult Degree Program Advisor, Linfield College
  • Bobbi Thomas, Senior Academic Advisor, Assistant Director of Student Services, Center for Distance & Professional Education, Washington State University
  • Pauline Graveline, Dean, Liberal Studies & Support Services, SUNY-Canton College of Technology

Come and join your colleagues at one of these sessions!
