Current Goals and Activities:

Each goal and/or activity has been related to the applicable mission and strategy within the NACADA Strategic Plan.


Topics of Interest (identified at annual Interest Group Meeting, Cincinnati, OH, October 2004):

  • finding ways to pair students up with faculty who share their goals;
  • managing the transition from high school to college for talented students who have not been challenged before;
  • distinguishing occupational goals from major disciplines;
  • dealing with students who are indifferent to advising, don't see its value;
  • helping talented students deal with failure;
  • helping talented students make the best of a limited program;
  • helping students do more than simply meet requirements;
  • helping students take risks;
  • teaching advisers to work with high achieving students;
  • working with high achieving students from the first generation;
  • helping students break through a narrow focus;
  • encouraging students in undergraduate research;
  • managing an open honors program (students self-declare);
  • helping high achieving students deal with competition;
  • counseling students out of competitive majors;
  • helping students lighten up;
  • retention of high achieving students who can move anywhere;
  • international honors students;
  • late entrance to honors programs;
  • recruiting and retaining diverse honors populations;
  • gender issues like women in engineering;
  • intellectual property questions
