Do you advise or work with students pursuing a General Studies, Interdisciplinary or Individualized Major degree? Join your colleagues at our first Individualized Major Interest Group meeting Tuesday, October 8, 2013, 4:30-5:30 p.m. at the national NACADA conference in Salt Lake City. We need your help to let NACADA know this is a need for members who work with these types of programs.
This proposed interest group would be extremely beneficial for NACADA members and would allow NACADA to support an emerging academic trend. The need for this interest group became evident at last year's NACADA conference during a session on advising this student population. The session was titled "Empowering Students to Make Gourmet Goulash: Advising Interdisciplinary, General Studies, and Student-Designed Degrees." While many institutions across the United States may title their programs in various ways, individualized major programs are a growing area of academic advising and an area that requires a specialized advising skill set. Specifically, the academic advisors of such majors must be equipped to: help students and educators understand the values of a student designed major program, help students determine what can be developed as proper field of study, how to work out a complex enrollment plan spanning across multiple departments on campus, finding the synthesis of creating new fields to adapt to emerging markets of the world around us, how to describe an individualized major program to future employers and graduate programs, how to conduct research and so much more. This interest group is an opportunity to connect advisors in this area, address best practices within this specific population, and learn from what other institutions are doing with their programs.
We will also have a table at the CIGD Fair Tuesday, October 8, 7:15-8:30 a.m. Grab your breakfast and stop by to chat with us.
We look forward to meeting you at the national NACADA conference in Salt Lake City in October!
