Statement:
My
past experiences in NACADA leadership positions are few. I am hopeful
that my outside experiences bring insight and energy to the LGBTA
Concerns Commission. Advisors realize that education is one of the
best ways to discover opportunities for hope, which is the basis
of our maturing as a society. Our diverse society is our greatest
strength. Understanding the complexities of our diversity require
increased awareness of current myths and concerns of underrepresented
groups.
Advisors
have the unique experience with students to learn, teach and listen.
They must respect and care for the souls of students and provide
a comfortable and supportive framework for ALL students. This is
NOT an easy task. It requires stepping out of the "comfort zone"
to stretch both the students' and advisors' understanding. Leaders
must encourage these conversations and establish the supportive
environment where all feel safe to explore new knowledge to live
in our world.
The
LGBTA Concerns Commission must provide a forum where both advisors
and students become empowered and grow. Increased knowledge, access
and opportunities for collaboration among all NACADA members through
articles, panels and both e-mail and personal conversations will
begin to facilitate education, hopefulness through struggle and
inclusion for ALL.
